A lot of work. Little to no guidance from management on expectations for the role. There was no evaluation or review conducted to suggest areas for improvement.

Great environment for student athlete

I loved Hampden-Sydney as college and as a place to play sports. It is a beautiful campus, great educators, great community.
I enjoyed teaching and coaching while I was there as well as raising a family. I did not like the fact that the college changed the nature of its character with the influx of leadership from the world of VMI. It tore the fabric of the school into a disarray of everything that was sacred to me, character, personal accountability, enjoyment, friendship, honest hard work at the expense of becoming a military operation with civilian of means.

Great place to work and good people to work with. Seem to stay fairly busy working but you work at your own pace. Overtime was always an option. They provide you with a company vehicle to drive at work along with whatever tools you may need. Increase in pay every year and good benefits.

The custodial work never ends because it's a busy college, but the people you work with are friendly and supportive.

I love being a part of the Hampden-Sydney community, and feel particularly fortunate to work in the Athletics Department. The college students can sometimes be somewhat dismissive of custodial staff until they get a sense of how well you do your job to support the college and their efforts.

Good Student Jobs

I was a student worker and enjoyed the work/life balance HSC provided me. I didn't work many hours per week, but that's because there was a fair distribution of hours per student employees. The managers are understanding that you're at school to learn and are lenient when it comes to time off for studying or doing school related tasks while on the job or when you're able to (e.g.- reading when no one is swimming and you're a lifeguard). Pay is minimum wage, but you do get a slight raise for every year you work.

Good Student Job

Worked here as a student. Gave hours that fit around schedule, professors easy to work with and for. Spent most of the time dealing with younger students and educating them about lab behavior and technique. Professors available to help with more challenging questions and applications. Good opportunities for future learning and teaching.
