Maybe in Astrophysics, but that is it. There is no room to navigate or to move forward. The Human Resources Department is the least of resources. No one is excited about what they do other than the scientists. Most of the employees have been here for more than 20 years. Administratively speaking there is absolute NO cross-training. Most managers work at a minimal level. You have the one guy that knows EVERYTHING and has to explain things to as if you're a moron. You cannot ask a question or you will be in the office with this guy for hours. There are NO career paths for anyone that is in an administrative role. It is terrible. We have a Director's Office where there is NO diversity, it looks nothing like the world in which we live. This particular Smithsonian Institution is NOTHING like the Smithsonian Institutions in Washington, DC. There is no moral boosting. There is no encouragement to do better. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory often re-hires individuals that retire. The person can retire, come back at a higher pay rate, as they are often hired as contractors. I've never experienced anything like this ANYWHERE. Most of my co-workers have been here for so long that they can't even work together professionally. They cannot disagree and remain professional, they will stop speaking to each other. It is a wonderful place to learn about Astrophysics, but that's it. If you aren't a scientist, astrophysics, researcher, fellow, you may as well keep walking, because you will get nowhere. There was a young lady that applied to several positions (she has a bachelor's degree, working on a Masters), she was turned around each time. One time, just before getting a new position, they re-hired an ex-employee and because all of the scientists were "used" to the old employee. Anyone that comes from the outside is in for a rude awakening. Keep moving. You will be sorely disappointed. Deputy Director's and Director's Office are totally out of touch with everyday people. They are elitists. Unless you are, you will not be valued. 0.0 0.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 Jan 22nd, 2021 04:32PM Mar 19th, 2021 08:23PM Harvard University Health Care Equipment & Services

In spite of a formal complaint made to HR, very little changed on a day-to-day basis. Elite scientific institute Management structure is very poor 1.0 0.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 5.0 1.0 Jan 22nd, 2021 04:32PM Mar 19th, 2021 08:35PM Harvard University Health Care Equipment & Services
private:harvarduniversity https://www.indeed.com/cmp/smithsonian-astrophysical-observatory/reviews Jan 19th, 2015 12:00AM Open Open Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Person Cambridge, MA USA Avoid like the plague. Management was unwillingly to resolve issues. Instead, it passed responsibilities onto subordinates. There was plenty of partiality and bigotry. Cliques were everywhere. People were vulgar, loud, and unfriendly. There was no one under 30 who worked there when I did. We were not encouraged to learn and develop. It appeared to be a nest for managers to retire. Several capable employees left because of the extreme micromanagement and management’s unwillingness to listen to experienced and educated workers. Management was unable to be effective. It allowed verbal abuse to flourish. There was not a single person of color when I was there. There was also a lot of homophobia. I often heard disgusting comments from coworkers. For an academic institution, this place wasn’t very academic and did not represent the Smithsonian well. Health insurance. Lack of educational benefits. Lack of training. The pay was awful for the area. 3.0 0.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 Jan 22nd, 2021 04:32PM Mar 20th, 2021 01:29AM Harvard University Health Care Equipment & Services
