I was a supervisor who did the job of a guard continuously standing posts and not actually supervising because Helix cant keep good people to save its rear end. the company is a revolving door, losing more people than it can keep employed. so many promises that it would get better but it never did and most likely never will. the owner only cares about the money he makes and not paying fair wages, no benefits, and never pays the stock promised. the management staff is overworked often doing the job of guards because the guards that are hired are useless minus a few good men. Helix will hire anyone, the training is garbage and the guards that are usually hired are timid. Using firearms that don't work, not mentally apt to provide any type of physical protection, not having ammo and physically dressed unprofessionally. Helix does not drug test so many of the guards may possibly participate in marijuana while on duty. Helix will fill a spot with just about anyone and put them on a site without a legal issue guard card by Denver concise or a MED badge just so they can fill a spot and "not lose a contract". This is a job that is demanding that is made to help people and keep them safe no matter the cost. They are by far the worst security firm I have ever worked for. They would work us 7 days a week on 12 hour rotations. I had been with the company for almost 2 years and never seen a raise or promotion in upper management. The company has all the trapping of second rate firm. You would think consider the risk you where taking that they would provide emergency medical training, soft armor for its employees operating in dangerous environments. Think again the only thing Helix upper management ever cared about was lining their own pockets. Also I don't think you want to work for a company that has a massive class action law suit against. For of all things, wage theft, yep thats right they would only pays 50 hours out of 100 plus we would work in our 7 day a week 12 hour shifts. These guys are straight crooks, they don't give a single thought to you as the employee. Not for your safety, and certainly not to your pay or wages. In my experience, they are very open to help their staff go to interviews and testing for other jobs that are in the public service areana. Such as police applications and military trainings. However, there was lashback about needing help to get a shift shortened so that I could take care of a crime I was a victim of and I was questioned about how I was handling it. The guards need to be trained in that they can legally do or not do. Some guards seem to think they are cops and others think we are like the mofia hired to protect a client. Some practices are encouraged or at least not reprimanded, such as putting someone in cuffs because they are being a nuisance. For promotions, Helix does a good job of promoting those who already work for Helix. However, the supervisors have more responsibility and often make less than the people they are in charge of. This takes away incentive from educated, experienced, and qualified people from staying with Helix for long. Many supervisors even think of this as being a temporary job while they look for something else and they could be really high up the command chain. For schedules, most of us are scheduled for 12 hour shifts or from the opening of a store until it closes. One place is a 15-16 hour shift that is allegedly broken into two shifts but often times a guard is assigned both shifts. This means that for the days one works, your life is work. Which is great for the workaholic or he single employee. But not for other people. Discipline is handled differently from person to person. I have know people to be removed from a site because they asked for a chair so that they don't stand for 12 hours and the client didn't like that request and I've known people who make threats and abuse their power over the people they protect and the client requests that guard be done but the guard keeps being assigned. So I don't know how they actually handle their discipline. They have also had the same individual be caught asleep 3-4 different times and nothing pernament was done until the client found the guard asleep and fired Helix. The pay is ok. Not enough to keep people around longer term without having to have a large desire to make this company their career and being open to demand more pay or they walk. Most people don't have that drive or feel comfortable to demand more money. Pay raises seems to be unorganized. They can have a guard with all the training and education, they propose lots of ideas for improvement (we were graded on that as part of performance reviews) and get no where as far as pay. A personal whose a combat veteran, or someone who has a bachelor's degree in the field, or former law enforcement could make the same as a college drop out and not have much available to them for getting rasies sooner than the others. Helix needs to filter who they hire more. They have some veterans with other than honorable or worse discharge types. It is very easy to get an honorable discharge, basically don't break civilian or military law and you get an honorable discharge. They also have hired people who were charged for breaking laws while in duty with other companies. I know that if ine isn't convicted than they didn't do it but given that security is involved with legal matters and we carry guns and other tools, these things matter. They will also leave a guard who gets reported many times for violating laws, policies, being unprofessional, and for ruining a relationship with a client at that spot where all the trouble is and blow off reports for reasons that aren't legal to know about. Such as this person filing this complaint have this issue and the issue is something that we can't legally know or act on. The same guard might get ten reports of making threats, abuse of power, and all sorts of things but Helix leaves a guard on the site. Finally, this company is all about the money. They have lost many clients because of bad guards. Instead of letting that guard go or putting that guard at s new and easier location, they would rather keep putting that person at that same spot over and over until the client says enough is enough and ends the contract. They also have some misleading business practices that leads the client to think they are paying for BOSS (that is their "elite" side that only combat vets and former LEOs can be in) but the client is getting guards from the normal pool of Helix guards. In sum, they need to provide training about what security can legally or not legally do. We can't legally put cuffs on a person for being a nuisance because they keep yelling, we can't threaten people while on the job, we can't block people from leaving an area unless that person has committed some sort of crime like an assualt that would warrant us needing to cuff them for our safety and for others safety. Some guards seem to think we are police and part of it is because of how training is conducted then the lack of training. Guards need to be held accountable and to be more proactive about situations with their guards. Instead of getting complaints and reports about a guard doing something illegal or unprofessional, look into and take that guard off of that site. Don't wait for the client to fire the guard because then you loose credibility with the client and your relationship is tarnished and then you loose to clients business.
