My team is comprised of some of the most supportive people I've ever met. I feel empowered to prioritize my mental health first which sets me up for success to put out my best work. I have opportunities to work on various projects and feel nothing but encouragement from my managers. I really love working here and I look forward to many more years! I would say the only con so far is that the pandemic has prevented us from meeting in person at our twice-yearly retreats! The in-person connections are so helpful for our culture, and I really miss that. Making thoughtful, deliberate and justifiable decisions for the best interest of all business stake holders including customers and employees! - A flexible remote work environment before remote work was fashionable. - Competitive and transparent compensation. - Really great teammates who are skilled at their craft and always willing to help support each other. Help Scout may not be a good environment for everyone. Being an entirely remote company and distributed across the globe causes a lot of important communication to happen asynchronously through writing or shared video. This can make the internal design and decision making process feel like it takes an unnecessarily long time and lead to frustration. The benefit of this approach is that decisions are not made in a silo and once they are made there is great visibility as to why a technical or business decision was made. This distribution of employees also results in a greater emphasis on automating and documenting internal processes so that other team members are able to replicate them. I am treated like an adult and given the autonomy and flexibility to do my best work. Help Scout is incredibly intentional with every decision, whether that’s what to prioritize on the product roadmap, or how to navigate doing business during a pandemic. This intentionality is especially apparent during the onboarding process, which is unique at a remote-first company. Everything is so well documented that you generally know where to find the information you need and who to go to with questions. The culture is also one where questions and feedback are welcomed and you never find yourself short on folks jumping in to listen and lend a hand. On top of all of that, the product is really great, so whether you’re selling it, building it, or supporting it, it feels so nice to believe that what you’re selling, building or supporting is the best in the market. I don't personally have any cons to share. Fun fact: I didn't actually know much about the company when I applied although I usually research things like that thoroughly so I was in for quite a surprise. In a good sense :D Where do I begin? Help Scout is a remote-first company with people in over 70 cities across the globe (and I've got to say folks here are very kind and smart, really a pleasure to work with which is quite important given we don't see each other often in real life), not just a company but also a PBC (so not just about profits but also about giving back to the community, environment, etc. It may sound cliche but I love that and I think it works great). There are very real ongoing efforts around DEI, fostering inclusive and safe work environment for everyone, I also appreciate transparency around how decisions are made and where company is headed. Next come benefits which I think are really great: insurance coverage, 1% retirement matching, quite generous home office and learn something stipends, stock options for all employees, team retreats twice a year, compensation that is not tied to a zip code (yay!), quite generous paid paternity/maternity leave. Another great thing is benefits work for both the US folks and international employees which you don't see often, I guess. Now my review may sound too good to be true but that's truly how it is, come and see for yourself! There are no cons for me really. All you have to do is look at their product and customer support reviews and you can see how much they care. They are in an interesting problem space, and focus on SMB is exciting and different than most SaS enterprise solutions. Their executive leadership is also 60% women, which is pretty incredible for a tech company. The folks there are on the senior side, so there is a lot to learn from your peers, and they have been a remote company since they were founded nine years ago and have done a great job to bring the global team together and create healthy remote practices. Very little downside here. The people are work with are so smart and empathetic and I learn so much from everyone around me. My input is valued and I feel motivated and energized by the mission and values of the company. I'm also able to work remotely for a team that is set up for remote work so I'm able to be super flexible and have a good work/life balance. All companies screw things up from time to time. What I like about Help Scout is that the folks learn from their mistakes and get better. Help Scout is by far the most empathetic company I've ever worked for. I feel so incredibly lucky to work with this group of caring, passionate, and highly talented individuals. I feel challenged in my work without feeling overwhelmed. I can say that I work hard every day and every week without feeling anywhere near burnout. And I know that when I need help, I don't ever have to look very far. The leadership team is thoughtful and more importantly, curious! They ask the right questions, lean into discomfort, and place most of the decision making power with those closest to the work. I'm very happy and hope to work for Help Scout for quite some time.
