HeyLets has been a great experience hacking on some really fun problems surrounding the social space, geo-places data and machine learning. I've had the privilege of working with a great team and taking ownership over a product that ships to a global community, has been featured in the A App Store and written up in numerous publications. The work environment is independent and empowering–a relatively flat power structure allows anyone with an opinion to voice it. There's a lot of collaboration and I've received great mentorship as well as being able to work closely with design and community teams to build common knowledge. The Biz-dev is well connected, we get to work on some cool strategic partnerships and connect with talented contractors. The company is still in its early stages and doesn't have a surplus of amenities. You will learn a hell of a lot getting a business off the ground and running. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is interested in gaining knowledge of social networking and the workings behind building a global community. Since HeyLets is focused on positive experiences, the user base is quite friendly and rewarding to work with. The team here is young and passionate about making a change in the way we share and discover experiences, and it was so rewarding to spend my past year here in the trenches with them. I did work long hours, but I accomplished and learned an insane amount of skills that I would have never gained in a purely 'social media' driven position. Last but not least, this company helped me throttle my career in tech (as well as learn/network with huge players in the tech space) and I could not be more thankful for the opportunities that have been placed my way. Startups are never easy, and if you cave under pressure, then you should probably never work at one. Since I was here pre Series A, I had a pretty standard startup salary, had to pay my own healthcare and my own cell phone bill. I met and worked with some great employees. Even though I preferred to focus on Mobile development, I was able to improve my experience with MySql, Java Servlet, and AWS development. I met some young interns who were working there, and although they were paid very poorly, some of them were quite bright, hard working, and friendly. The owner is a gregarious celebrity and likes to throw parties, drink, and laugh a lot. He likes to take his employees out for a drink. The following comments about the CEO are neither false nor unjustified. They are intended to warn others from making the same mistake I made. The owner is from Europe, Canada, and Australia, which is cosmopolitan and potentially quite interesting, but there is a derision towards American culture which was manifested as innuendos about American Football, Wine, the Space Program, and the 4th of July. If these are his opinions then that's okay but that he used his position to deride my culture was quite unprofessional and disheartening. However, these concerns were trivial when compared to the treatment of his workers. He treated his hard-working employees as if they were lucky to work for him, even if it is for free. He made equity promises to multiple hard-working young employees but never delivered. When I had to go visit my dying father, he tried to fast-talk me into staying and provided no support for me when I decided to leave anyway. After my father died, he seemed to pretended sorrow out of embarrassment rather than sincerity. The old saying about invention being 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration was my unheeded mantra there. He piled an unachievable amount of work on 2 engineers who were doing the work of 10. And one of them was a smart young guy with no previous experience in software design. Luckily this young guy is smart, hard working, and innocent. He also wasn't shy about flaunting his wealth with last minute trips to Hawaii, or Australia, or the islands, yet he had his gainfully employed workers work less than 40 hours (only on paper) so he wasn't legally liable for providing health benefits. I asked him twice why he didn't want to sacrifice some of his own wealth for the company and it's workers. Team outings can be really fun. Some awesome people work/have worked there. The office is large. If you are considering working for this company I strongly suggest that you get everything in writing. Must have your own computer. Boss travels a lot and can be a little moody when numbers are down. There aren't any added benefits apart from free food and drinks here and there. I was one of the first people at the company. We had some fun team dinners, used to have snacks in the office, and the team was generally fun to be around. I was promised equity on two separate occasions. Once after my 9 MONTH LONG INTERNSHIP. Then again after I had been working with the company for over a year. Eventually I couldn't live in San Francisco on my pittance of a salary. I had to take another job offer I was given. I was told by the CEO, Justin Parfitt, that if I left my equity would be revoked. I had no choice, but to leave. I was taken advantage of. I have a recording of the CEO acknowledging having promised me equity twice and not living up to either of his promises. Beware, he will use his silver tongue to placate you. The CEO spoke disrespectfully about MULTIPLE past employees in front of current employees. Interns are used without being taught much of anything. Cheating someone who worked hard for you in order to save yourself a few shares of the company is greedy. Hire a CTO and a growth-hacker. Those are the two most important positions for the company at this time. Finally, listen to the users and the growth-hacker.
