Direction is vague
|
Not the best management structure. Good people with solid skills were given great feedback during reviews and then suddenly let go with no logical reason.

Producer at a startup software company
|
My typical day involved wrestling a schedule that was very dynamic and fluid. My tasks involved ensuring all components (people) of the development team had the resources they needed to do their job. I interfaced with 3rd party distributors and publishers, created PowerPoint presentations for these groups.
Internally, I was responsible for ensuring all facets of the team worked together with full knowledge of deliverables and the ability to deliver them on time and budget.
At this company, I was not required to oversee a budget, but I had to ensure costs were consistent with the needs of my team without bankrupting our company.
At the time of my employment the company had ~ 15 - 20 employees and building.
I reported directly to the CEO (a founder) and the other founders of the company.
I had one direct report, Associate Producer.
The hardest part of my job was managing my expectations of the job versus the founders expectations. Needless to say, I wished to have more pull when it came to direction of a project.
A difficult part of this position (with this company in particular) was getting a cohesive schedule when the design changed several times a week. Managing the scope of a project with a fluctuating design that could be completely dropped one moment was frustrating.
I learned that I may be professionally more comfortable with a larger more uniform company than a small startup. I prefer to hash out large design segments before my programmers start coding.
I believe I fit better at a larger company with established methods of production that allows for tweaking of design elements that don't work instead of scrubbing a week or two worth of work.

An excellent small developer to work for
|
Hidden Path is home to a lot of talented, dedicated people. It's a no B.S. atmosphere with very little politicking. They work on a wide variety of projects, both self and externally funded.
Each partner is a subject-matter expert in his field, and brings a wealth of knowledge to the production of games. Other than the partners, there are not really any other management roles. The organization is very flat, and encourages all employees to contribute in any way they see fit.
There is no management pressure to work over-time, and a very strong impulse from the partners to create a happy, healthy work environment.
The main downside of working at Hidden Path, is that there are not a lot of high-profile projects, and it's not a big enough company that you can specialize as an employee, if that's what you're looking for.
|
friendly, collaborative atmosphere. tons of brilliant people. ot virtually non-existent.
|
decent, but not outstanding benefits. small projects. no "advancement" track, since it's a flat organization.
