Amazing colleagues from a surprisingly wide variety of backgrounds. Effective fully remote culture, and a lot of appetite for improving the culture over time. Lots of independence and growth opportunities for those that want them. If you desire more responsibility and independence, you can gain them extremely rapidly if you're willing to work hard and learn as you go. Alumni have gone on to amazing positions at other organizations. Team members are expected to grow rapidly. While there have been pivots, it is in part to roll with the times and be relevant to the current situation at hand. For instance, at the start of COVID, we were able to pivot quickly and build a tool used by hundreds of thousands of people. The CEO has gotten better over the years and responsive to input and the board. It's good to know that the board and investors are supportive of the overall social impact and mission of the organization. A small team means there is alot of work and expectations are high for each member. Work life balance has gotten better but can still be improved. As stated, the current culture is more like a startup than a non-profit. Lots of interesting and challenging technologies/problems to work on, and love the impact to team size ratio. Despite being surrounded by exceptional peers, the leadership (especially the CEO, and enabled by the CTO) fails to support and uplift employees to their fullest potential, instead taking the route of micromanaging, gaslighting, and providing feedback that leads to nowhere. All the talk about a horizontal organizational structure, open feedback culture, and a deep respect for excellence are a complete facade. Oftentimes, the mission statement, though it is very inspirational, is used against employees as a means of guilting them or justifying mistreatment. This oftentimes manifested in low salaries (without equity), bureaucratic processes, lack of flexibility to allow for work/life balance, manipulative tactics to keep people from leaving, among many other things. Beyond the toxic work environment, it is also unclear if we are really making any meaningful steps towards fulfilling the company's mission. It's such a shame... the mission is what drew so many wonderful people into such an awful organization. It was incredible to work with people who were driven by the mission to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. The team at Human Dx is wonderful and the strength of the organization - I was constantly amazed by how smart my colleagues were and inspired by their dedication to the mission. This is a particularly exciting time for Human Dx given their shift to more directly working to helping patients achieve better outcomes at more affordable prices. I would highly recommend Human Dx to anyone who wants to work with a great team to make the world a better place. If I had one area of improvement for Human Dx this would it: given Human Dx is very mission driven, it often attracts people who have non-profit backgrounds and are expecting a non-profit type culture. Currently Human Dx's culture is probably more similar to a traditional Silicon Valley startup (quick experimentation and iterations, hustle, hard work, moving fast, and high standards) and that sometimes leads to a mismatch. (Human Dx's culture has evolved over time as in the past it was working on some bigger foundation-focused initiatives like the MacArthur 100&Change competition, but is now working on socially-oriented but more consumer/commercial applications of its technology.) During the transition, some employees felt like Human Dx was not the best cultural fit for them as they were expecting a traditional nonprofit. I would not wish working here on anybody. It has worn down months and years of well-being from some of my favorite humans. The CEO is an incredibly capricious and controlling figure within the workplace, seeming to fancy himself as some sort of Steve Jobs-polymath-genius-visionary type. He has no qualms about bending, breaking, or inventing rules to get his way on any little thing from chair layout to color palettes. There's a heavy cultural focus on achieving excellence in all things, but "process" at this company is largely a weapon for the CEO to bully his way into decisions that should be way out of scope for him. Operationalizing the mission and core insights behind Human Dx would be an immense challenge in any case, but the work environment here actively hinders progress. Over and over again, we've attracted teammates with incredible talent and backgrounds, only for them to be beaten down and pushed out (or leave of their own accord when they realize the futility of getting anything done under Jay's micromanagement). There is a real sense of camaraderie and everyone truly cares about the social objectives of the institution. You will learn a ton here and really have the opportunity to grow into a thought leader, and you will be a part of a group that really lives by its philosophy and principles.
