Terrific place to work
|
|
- Great work-life balance
- Surrounded by folks that are super passionate about what they do
- Engage with scientists that are pioneering their field
- A great stepping stone / first job to have a resume
|
- No pay raises or bonuses
- Work is mundane at times, depending on the project

- Great Scientific community to interact with if at the NIH Bethesda campus
- They have a training staff that operates like human resources to help you both personally and professionally
- Lots of opportunity to network and find other open positions
- Most labs have intramural funding, if you secure a spot, you don't have the pressures of extramural funded labs.
|
- Might be in an older building with older resources/equipment
- May be cumbersome to get to lab, parking and traffic adds to longer commute drive/walk

Super dedicated and intelligent program officers who all strive to advance biomedical and genomic research.
A great stepping-stone for learning about working in government services and managing large scientific projects.
Taught me how to be a young professional. Plenty of room to learn and advance fundamental workplace skills and communication.
|
Some difficult personalities to work with, but nothing unmanageable.
Depending on the project, work can feel mostly administrative.
A con for some, locked into a two-year contract. There is also no room for upward mobility if that is what you're looking for. The position is meant to enhance graduate and medical school applications, though it is also a great look for moving into other industries.

Not a great place to become an independent researcher
|
|
- a lot of interesting seminars and courses to attend
- great place to develop analytical skills
- stipend is reasonable
|
- as a postdoc you're a trainee, not an employee
- very little independence
- not allowed to apply to most grants
- postdocs are not allowed to supervise PhD students
- postdocs are not allowed to telework
- only 2 weeks holiday per year

Academic Environment That Encourages Professional Growth
|
|
Enjoyed my time here - many opportunities for professional and career training/growth, friendly people, decent salary. Worked with many experts in the field who understood and respected the science. My group was always bringing in outside collaborators and encouraged trainees to truly develop their passions and interests. A great place to learn and make connections.
|
Work-life balance was an issue. Many investigators worked more than 40 hours a week and encouraged others to do the same. Sometimes this led to issues with boundaries, with managers asking more of employees than was appropriate. However, they were open to discussing and negotiating this. NIH campus is gated, so you are very secluded during the day.

Great internship program and opportunity to interact with other research motivated students. Principal investigators gave guided projects and were readily accessible as mentors.
|
Mentors can vary in how much independence you receive on the research project. Some research projects are completely independent and others are extensions of your mentors project
