A company in transition

Throughout my time at IdeaPaint the company has always had great people especially over the past 2-3 years. Company has been open with its communication to employees. Our products really do help companies democratize communication and help get things done. Cool office right in downtown Boston. Benefits are good overall.
|
Many key leaders have left the company for other jobs over the last six months to include well respected CEO, head of international and many marketing and sales leaders. Current Sr. Management is good and trusted but there is no real leader now. Interim President (ex-footwear) still figuring it out.

More advice to the board: I think it would make sense to find a leader from the Paint industry rather than from footwear. For the rest of the senior management, don't lose faith and keep involving the team as you always have in mapping our future.

Original management team was driven and dedicated to learning the industry. They cared and invested in their people. Valued people's opinions and collaborated. Unfortunately this has nothing to do with the current leadership.
|
Current leadership is an epic fail. The board made the biggest mistake with this leadership team. The CEO and the two VPs of sales need to be let go and they need to find people who know the paint industry. They talk such a big game and never back it up. All the do is talk! There is a huge lack of communication and there is no one leading the team. No training and development which sets up people to fail with high turnover. Unfortunately the poor examples of leadership trickles down to middle management and the team. Finally, the product performance is mediocre at best and it is way over priced. Anyone who says this company is an amazing place to work has not been there long enough and are blind.

Startup atmosphere, fun product, great team bonding and awesome office location. Work-life balance is very flexible but you have to ignore the "do you deserve this time off" pushback. You have the ability to do pretty well if your region is strong and if the go to business strategy makes sense.

IdeaPaint has definitely outgrown the Startup phase but has not continued to grow as a small business. Departments are in the same office but feel like they are on the other side of the world. The lack of chemistry between the departments makes it difficult to grow as ONE TEAM. They REFUSE to join the 21st century and take advantage of FREE promotion such as Social Media. Management is very diverse from an experience and mindset perspective. Transparency between management and the employees is basically non-existent. Sales structure is trail and error every year and always changes as they have yet to find one that works. Every week the team goal will change and there is no consistency or reason for it. The sales managers (although great people) completely contradict each other mainly due to their age- one new school the other very old school. Besides the fact that we had free lunch on Fridays (pizza) there is just about zero employee appreciation. That said, I was at the company for 2 years and endured multiple changes in management, strategy, co-workers (very, very often). All in all the company is bearable to work for but will not launch your career by any means.

Rely on your employees for recommendations and feedback. Increase the transparency between departments and make your employees feel appreciated. Lastly, step back and realize that the biggest change can happen by tweaking an already great structure, no need to throw everything away and start over. It is time to figure it out..

Company has a very clear mission and I understand my role on the team. Compensation structure is very competitive. IdeaPaint has lots of opportunity and invests in hiring quality staff and in technology to help drive growth. My direct boss as well as senior leadership up through the CEO and the Co-Founder are very accessible and are willing to help with any opportunity or issue. I appreciate the weekly training lunches and monthly all company updates. Everyone across the company are smart and good to work with making for a good work environment. I joined at roughly the same time as over half the organization so there is a "family" feel to the office. Lastly, the office layout and location are great especially if you take public transport.
