We got breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we had beer on tap, open workspaces, and a game room. A lot of great perks! Unfortunately, lower-level management was horrible. They pick and choose who their favorites are and don't even bother to hide them. It made for an extremely toxic environment, which isn't so great for such a small company. I brought it up a couple of times that our team was divided, which made working as a team hard, and my response was "Yeah, I'm not sure how to fix that". I'm sorry, but that's your job as a manager to fix that. It was like being in high school again. There were constant eye rolls and snickering from my team members. Some of us were doing much more work than others, meaning actually doing our jobs and not just hanging out. It took three years to get a promotion and when I did, I was told not to share the news with anyone because feelings might get hurt. It's been a while since I left and I'm so much happier. Don't get me wrong, there was a time when I loved waking up and going to work each day, but the toxic atmosphere of my team made it hard to want to be there. Luckily, I had friends in other teams who were great and made my days more enjoyable. My advice to management is this, treat everyone as equals and you'll have happier employees and a higher retention rate. Executive management constantly gossips, points blame, and creates this" image" of a fun place to work. iDevices really tries to have a nice culture, and for the most part they succeed (small startup perks). However, this comes at a massive cost of salary and benefits. Of all the jobs I had this place had the worst benefits: no 401k match, low salaries, little health care coverage. Everything was extremely unorganized, no agile development, just a philosophy to do work. I honestly had so much time with no much to do, it was frustrating. A lot of the senior engineers were past the hill of 50, so they don't trust or have respect for younger engineers. Cross team communication was poor. One time, I pointed out a bug to the Mobile team, the engineers literally got mad at me, and did not want to deal with the issue before releasing. Umm, I am sorry that I trying to help better the product? Also, I left before the acquisition, but knowing that there products were not selling, the space they were in was extremely crowded, and no sale price for the acquisition was announced the acquisition was a save our !@#$ please. One year after leaving, I saw a new company photo they took. I didn't recognize half the people, retention at the company was just horrible. Nobody, stayed which also made working here very difficult. Every Pro ends up being a Con, like "unlimited PTO" It should say "unlimited PTO depending on who you are" The Executive team gossips and speaks negatively about everyone that works there, including speaking derogatorily about people that have left. It's now part of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, and the culture and working experience are shifting towards "big corporate." Senior leadership has almost no prior experience in electronics, tech, or software. They don't understand the technology and won't listen to the advice of the engineers that do understand it. There are a lot of issues with product performance and customer dissatisfaction. Leadership often chooses to ignore existing product issues in favor of adding new features or creating new products. Leadership in many teams is authoritarian and rigid, with no flexibility or ability to innovate. There is extreme pressure to constantly increase output and pace of work. Choose a strategy based on data and sound advice, clearly communicate it to the entire team, and then stick to it unless reliable data suggests a change is warranted. private:idevices https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=716070 Apr 19th, 2017 12:00AM Open Open iDevices United States USA Don't be sold on culture and perks They have beer on tap... iDevices product portfolio is very weak in a saturated start-up environment ruled by big companies like google. iDevices products are consistently get poor reviews and the app always has connections issues with every update. The reason is the products are priced too high, too much focus on the app experience and not the product viability and an obsession with a sophisticated brand that someone on the design team sees as being equivalent to apple. iDevices has no brand recognition in the industry and very few people actually have their products. Despite repackaging and bundling the products, there is only 3 products that have not gained traction. iDevices did have one good product, the igrill, the one that started the company, but has since been sold off to Weber grills, and the company is trying to pivot from a grill accessory to a Smart Home company and has stumbled. I would caution against working here because there is uncertainty in the air. There is also no diversity and all the teams are 95% dudes. They try to sell the culture to offer lower pay, but unlimited paid time off is a psychological trick... everyone is afraid to take any time they deserve besides the upper 1%. There is no team spirit, innovation nor collaboration. There are 4 teams plus call center that are isolated and do not interact with each other. Well they are all kind of geeks with no social skills. The culture is highly conservative, the opposite of every startup I have worked with in the past. Doing things outside of the box and new is met with skeptism and reservations of not doing the same old same old. There is also a fair amount of fear of losing little control pockets of some managers, especially within the design team. I spent summer 2016 at iDevices working primarily on marketing and brand strategy, and absolutely loved my experience! Chris (CEO) is a tremendous leader and visionary, and he has wisely installed qualified, capable, and experienced directors and managers with great technical expertise who guide the product development and iteration processes on a daily basis. The company felt very flat, and the c-suite executives were welcoming, helpful, and clearly invested in their employees’ success. Great perks like an in-house chef and short hours are awesome to have as well :) Lacking ethnic and gender diversity. You will feel like you can go to anyone for advice, and its refreshing to work somewhere where everyone works so well together. The work is also fast paced and there are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills. It is nice to feel challenged and satisfied by the work you can do.
