Everyone is just going through the motions while the same mistakes and failures happen over and over again. There's no vision for the future. Lab and office spaces are at least 20 years out of date, which is an ironic twist on being in one of the most architecturally beautiful cities in the world. Because there is no vision, there is little (if any) room for career growth. In this environment, where the company doesn't look at the big picture, pay is not competitive, and there's little concern for maintaining and cultivating good talent. Employees are commodities: get them for cheap, get whatever you can from them, repeat. IITRI does just enough to keep the doors open because the average tenure is 12 years: lifers who coast knowing they're pretty much the only ones who know how the dysfunctional machine operates. Management probably knows it's too risky to cut dead weight because processes at IITRI are shambolic, inefficient, and irreproducible, making them hard to change and impossible to teach to someone new.

The management is terrible, the leadership lacks maturity, integrity, people skills and ethics. There are few meetings, no aligned goals, no strategic anything and no accountability across the board. Each division functions like it's own little company with it's own budget and it's own rules. Leaders do not lead. They pit people against each other. There is little to no synchronicity across departments.

Get new leadership that actually treats people ethically and that creates a transparent and productive working environment. Stop buying animals from convicted animal smugglers! It gives everyone in this already highly challenging industry a bad name and it creates additional undeserved challenges and perceptions this industry does not need. Show some responsibility, respect and some loyalty to your fellow scientists and colleagues!

This is a small, old, non-profit with established ways, policies and culture that provide for a very dysfunctional business and working environment by any current day standards. They consistently fail to meet reasonable expectations for good customer service and they consistently fail to adequately support the front line people bringing new people and business to the door. Change is so very needed in the culture internally from top down.

Good experience to learn new techniques during times when the company has a lot of contracted projects to work on. Tuition benefits at the school.

Management is rarely present. Leaves management/training/scheduling to senior lab technicians. Senior lab technicians were not qualified to fulfill role of management, lacked proper skills and etiquette. When the company has a slow period, senior lab technicians, fearing for their own jobs do not help and properly train junior technicians so that if lay-offs occur, senior technician keep their own jobs.
Harassment in the workplace was ignored by HR when brought up in a complaint.
Also poor pay.
