Things are looking up
Nice office and very interesting work. IHE is respected as a news organization and you will have excellent access and get great clips. New reporting lines in editorial make a lot of sense. Lots of positive changes happening that are long overdue. New benefits recently introduced such as 401k match, increased vacation and short-term disability.
Staff on the editorial side of the office frequently work late nights and weekends. This is not unusual in journalism, but work-life balance could be improved. Reporter salaries are not on par with competing publications in the area. Most reporters move on after a couple of years due to lack of career progression.

Making the company more profitable is important, but don't forget great journalism is what underpins IHE's success. Please keep investing in your reporters and editors and supporting their professional growth. If you hire young people with limited experience, make sure you set them up to succeed. A full-time HR manager could vastly improve hiring practices and onboarding processes at IHE.

Rather Rancorous

I cannot think of any. There were a few very nice people.

Great opportunity
I loved my time here – I had the chance to report every single day and wasn't stuck with the more menial intern tasks. I was given the opportunity to explore different topics in higher education while still writing interesting stories.
Because I was only there for three months, it was difficult to really get my foot in the door – that was through no fault of theirs. Would have also been nice to have periodic one-on-one meetings with editors to discuss ways to improve.

Love Working at Inside Higher Ed
It's a great feeling knowing that you and your coworkers actually enjoy what you're doing everyday. There is a considerable sense of teamwork and collaboration. The environment is professional yet comfortable, the benefits are the best I've had and I really like working with my team.
As others have stated-- work/life balance is very important here. Managers are flexible, understanding and willing to work with their employees when it comes to vacation and commuting issues.

Collaborative and supportive place to work!
I worked at Inside Higher Ed for 5 years. I had fantastic mentors and truly enjoyed coming to work. The benefits are better than average for a small company (health, vacation, comp time for weekend work/travel). Professional development was encouraged, and people were recognized for outstanding performance. Inside Higher Ed is by and for academics, so if you have an interest in higher ed, policy, and/or current events, this is the place for you. The downtown DC location is also a great perk!
Like any small company, there is not a clear framework for promotion like some larger companies.

Love, love, love my job and Inside Higher Ed
- A genuine interest in challenging the status quo. Change can be difficult at times anywhere, but for the most part the management team and staff are on board with new methods and opportunities. Plus, if you want to take on new responsibilities, there are opportunities to do so.
- Work/life balance is a real thing here. People understand that you have responsibilities or interests outside of work and are supportive of that. Most of the time, I don't work on the weekends or at night (a welcome change in DC).
- Nice people who work well as a team. This may seem minor but is HUGE. Everyone is really nice and generally looking out for the company rather than themselves. We also have in-office happy hours at times and other social activities like pizza lunches to welcome new employees and monthly "birthday parties."
- Interesting work and leaders who are really passionate about higher ed and online publishing. I actually look forward to coming to work each day.
- Great location near Farragut North and West metro stops. Lots of lunch options nearby, plus auxiliary services like gyms, hair/nail places, drugstores, etc.
- It would be nice to have more opportunities for the business and editorial sides to work together or socialize together.
- The building is starting to age a bit and it shows but it was recently bought by a new company so I expect it will improve over time.
- There are so many great ideas but not always enough bandwidth (time, staff) to execute on them. That's probably pretty common though.

Nothing really. Just keep up what you're doing. Continue to invest in your people and, if necessary, help them identify and forge new paths for success within the company.
