Whats not to like for the most part? The owner is very nice, laid back type of guy that knows the marketing business very well. The owner gives everyone a chance to perform, is open to suggestions, and easy to work with. There are no real set hours- The hours are very flexible. Come to work and leave when your work is done. The owner works hard and most of the time carries the load of the under-performing employees. The design capability of this place is great and many customers have been coming back for years. They know how to design and do it well. The owner is a perfectionist when it comes to designing a project. It's a great trait to have and he teaches anybody who wants to learn. There is no micro-management. The owner lets workers do the job they were hired to do, they are free to be creative as any good manager should do. It's a small office and there is no health insurance coverage. The performance of some of the workers is sub-par and it reflects on the only employees who have to pick up the slack. Because they have freedom they are constantly on their cell phones, texting, or surfing the internet, on smoke breaks, walking dogs and leaving others to do their work. Fortunately now there is a good group of workers that make the place a great place to work. Clients can be a little demanding, and the owner lets the clients get away with too much in my opinion. Hire better employees that aren't desperate, with a sense of entitlement. And employees that want to work and do a good job, and not just collect a paycheck. Keep giving great feedback and review of work that offer solutions for the worker to implement. If nothing else, the owner manages to hire excellent people, and then ruin their lives. The owner manages to combine passive aggressiveness with a Napoleon complex, which is quite a feat. Further, he is socially awkward and incredibly inept as a leader. He pays far below scale, will micromanage you incessantly, and will blame you for everything he does incorrectly. Expect absolutely no positive reinforcement. The culture is awful, as everyone hates their job and the leadership. There really is no good reason to work here unless you want a small crowd, but other than that, it's a great way to stress yourself out and loose confidence in yourself. They've got great machines though - all new iMacs an the latest software on it. There's a dog there - a nice dog. I could say that the worst place about working here is the management. There is none. It's insane what pressure the manager is under, and the boss doesn't seem willing to take anything off the poor manager's shoulders. I feel incredibly sorry for her. I'm still not sure what he actually does in his office other than surf the internet. The work that comes out of there isn't the greatest either; more corporate stuff that can't stand up against what other design companies of the same size are putting out. Stuck in the 80's. I think being able to have concise, clear conversations that address a problem instead of glide over it and subtly insult their job performance is not the way to run a business. It's better even since you're allowed to take a lot of creative freedom with some of the projects. It's contract work so you don't get benefits, but the owner is really easy to work with.
