IISD is full of very hardworking staff and the organization mantra is inspiring

There is a lack of clear internal organization process and objective, with multiple cases of workplace bullying, favoritism, and gaslighting from middle-management.
Planning ahead is not a strong suit for IISD, and expectations are often not communicated until the very last minute (sometimes even hours before the deadline). This leads to (unpaid) overtime to make changes that should've been addressed in the planning phase.
Though remote working (pre-pandemic), flexibility and work-life balance has been promoted throughout the organization, those "benefits" are not a given or merit-based, but rather based on the personal discretion of your direct supervisor.
Performance reviews are based on the Terms of References that was signed at the beginning of the job, yet how do you measure performance when you are constantly required to take on tasks beyond your scope of responsibilities. Refusal is impossible since it often leads to either your core responsibilities being taken away by management or called-out for being uncooperative.

The IISD is a great place for starting out a career. The projects are as varied and interesting as the staff. There is a lot of opportunity to find and develop your own projects.
|
The amount of over time put in for project (research) staff is not compensated with overtime pay and the large work load makes for taking off time in lieu difficult. Expect to work long hours on a regular basis.
