Payroll issues, demoralizing management

Downtown location near the Gold Medal Park.

Payroll issues - paychecks not on time / for the wrong amount / etc. 401(k) contributions NOT being deposited into my account. No direct deposit.
Tedious, uninteresting projects. Lots of busywork.
Completely demoralizing project manager.
General disorganization and lack of clear direction.
Uneven workload from one day to the next, with a lot of “hurry up and wait.”
The owner isn’t around much. He also runs a couple other businesses, so his attention seems to be divided, this company no longer being the top priority.
Face-to-face communication is discouraged. Instead, all interaction is supposed to go through an online ticketing/messaging system, which I felt was pretty isolating.
People vaping in the workplace.

It wouldn’t hurt to do some research into the psychology of employee motivation.
As one example, when starting on a new task, people generally weren’t willing to give me much information about the client or project. It was just sort of unceremoniously dropped in my lap. This usually left me with pretty low interest in whatever I was supposed to be working on.

iE is plagued by it's dysfunctional approach to managing people and projects. Unnecessary meetings, miscommunication (no clear direction), disinterested boss, and a blatant disregard of market realities.
What really irked me was that there was no clear direction at all and no vision for anything because the owner is either too busy or simply does not care.

Fellow co workers were nice to work with, free pizza on Monday, cool space, casual dress code, cool area of downtown, parking in back, near public transportation routes, discount at brewery downstairs

Care about your projects and moving them forward, working with your team, and making your employees feel valued. Making this feel like a hostile work place kills creativity and the motivation to do good work. Don't make employees feel like it's their fault for projects not moving along when it's really you unable to make any decisions whatsoever to move the project along. IE felt like it was on the back burner to the event center and brewery downstairs so getting any time was hard.

Great place to grow, learn, do. Fast-paced with appropriate work-life balance.

Co-workers are hard working, diligent, likable folks. Monday lunches are free. Nice 401K program. Fun, cooperative, and open learning environment. I'd recommend this place to anyone.
|
If you can't be flexible and require a rigid schedule structure, this place may not be for you. You may need to jump in on several different projects every few weeks, provide estimates on on a whim, get on a call last minute, and so forth.

A generally laid back place to work with negativity coming from the top

On a superficial level the work environment is very good: casual dress, beers after work, nice co-workers, cool offices, etc.
|
Since it's a small company, there's not a whole lot of chance for advancement. Most importantly, the leadership fails to inspire people to do good work - with high turnover rates and lots of complaining as a result.
