Marketing Account Executive Chicago, IL Ehh There are things to be learned from this place, such as work ethics and sales skills, but this certainly isn't the only place to learn them. You can find a job at any other sales company and learn the same thing while getting paid more and working reasonable hours. The short version: average $600 a week. In the office at 10:30- 11am and leave the office at 9-9:30. you will not make it to management. door to door sales for an average product. lacks professionalism -a lot of sleeping around with people -sexual innuendoes and sexist jokes in the office all the time managers will lie/ exaggerate about how much they make and the opportunity (see long version below for more thorough explanation). The long version: Let's start with the basic company business model... JME is a third party sales company that is affilated with its parent company, Credico, which is a client broker. Credico has a portfolio of clients from every industry out there. It allows a company to do business with its clients, for a fee. So in the case of JME is small company that sells utility services to residential customers (door to door sales). So lets say you make a sale that brings in $120 revenue. $40 goes to the client, Direct Energy, because they are the one providing the service. $40 goes to Credico, because they are the middle man who set up the client contract in the first place. Then $40 goes to the company that sold the product. Of the $40, the sales rep keeps $25 of it. The owner keeps $15. Now this business is not technically a pyramid scheme per se, since it actually sells a product, but de facto it is, since the majority of the work you do does not produce wealth for society: They call it a "management training" program and tell you, and everyone else, that "no one is here to do sales". The goal is to learn how to do sales, recruit and train a team to do the same, and then get into management where all the money is. After all, who wants to do the door to door sales ("the field") forever? The pitch is that in the beginning, you are over worked and under compensated. And then once you hit management, you are under worked and over compensated, i.e. suck it up now and reap your rewards later. But this whole system is flawed from the start precisely because they pitch it as such. But then again, they don't really have much of a choice than to pitch the job as a long term goal (I'll re-circle on this point again later). On paper, this sounds legit, because at a fundamental level, this is how all companies operate. Produce a service, get paid, then grow and splinter as a company. But there is a gaping hole in JME's particular adaptation of this model. Firstly, think about it, if everyone is there for management, and did indeed make it to management, then who would there be to manage? In order to personally make money, you need to get into management. But in order to manage, you need people to do the dirty work. But if everyone wants to get into management, and no one wants to do the dirty field work (door to door sales), then 1 of 2 things happen. Every gets into management and nobody makes money. Or the sales rep quit because they realize they cannot get to management, and then the manager has to keep hiring new people on a daily basis. The second case is what happens. There are people being interviewed all the time at JME because the retention rate is miserable (people typically leave after 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months mark). The system is unsustainable. From a theoretical perspective, what if everyone in the area worked there and then left after 3 months? Then the business would fail. But there are always people looking for jobs, so that problem is more theoretical than practical, especially in the city like Chicago. The reason for this sliding door is that people do not get compensated enough for their work. I work now at a sales company where I clock in 30-40 hours a week and make $70-$80k a year. 5 days a week. Salary and commission. I get benefits, 401k, gas reimbursements, flexible scheduling, insurance, and paid vacation. At companies like JME, you get none of the aforementioned benefits. You work about 60-70 hours a week and get paid around $600 a week. And the work is pretty brutal. Getting doors slammed in your face and the police called on you (which has happened to me multiple times), is not pleasant. Make no mistake: any legit door to door job pays you very well precisely because very few people can do it. The company I work for now, the top reps make between $150-250k door to door and work probably around 20-30 hours a week (it is one of the most highly sought after positions in the company, precisely because of that). The company treats us well because they know the job is hard and not very many people have what it takes to do it, so they spoil the crap out of us (really, I have like the best gig right now). In fact, any legitimate B2B or D2D sales company will pay that kind of money to their reps. To put this in perspective: I've worked and/or interviewed with many sales company since college, and most of the time everyone actually wants to do sales and not management because you make way more money and work way less doing sales than managing. At JME, the record week paycheck was about $960. And remember, no benefits. The reason they pitch interviewees on management is precisely because they know that the actual job itself, aka the field, will not be attractive enough to get people to stick around. So they have to pitch people on another opportunity, i.e. management (really clever marketing if you think about it, albeit deceitful). The point is, the field is miserable within this business system. And when people don’t stick around, you can't build a team, and you can't get into management. So everyone loses really. The biggest reason people don’t realize the truth is that they are brainwashed. One thing about sales is that people do not buy a product or an idea based on logic, they buy it off of emotional impulse. They justify it with logic in hindsight. I know I did. When I did my interviewed with my first manager, her pitch was so damn good I accepted the offer and started two days later (which I've never done before). So be warned, even if it sounds good, think it through. I will admit, the company is very good at feeding people lies and promoting a false dream. People are brainwashed into thinking that hard work and attitude will triumph every time, even if the system works against them. And the system truly does work against everyone, except for the guys up top. I've seen too many hard workers and talented people fail at this business already. But I don’t blame anyone at the company itself; they are also victims of their managers, who are victims of their higher ups as well. The only people who benefit from this business model are the people at the very top. The sad thing is that I knew all of this when I took the job. But I went through with it because I thought I could have been that top .0001% of the pyramid. And the managers will do everything to make you think you can be "that" guy. You're not that guy. The biggest lie they will tell you is that you are in control of your own situation. In an ideal world, sure. But in the real world, no. There will always be factors you cannot control that will prevent your progress in this business. For example, if your manager is incompetent, then you will have a harder time growing your own team because you will lack the recruiting. That is the biggest reason people don't make it into management. And Chicago is one of the hardest markets to recruit for this kind of business. No matter how hard you work, if you lack the right resources, you’re chances of success are pretty damn low, and there’s nothing you can do about it, unless you’re special. And everyone thinks they’re special, because that’s what the managers want you to think so you keep grinding for them. The problem with companies like JME is that it takes some people months, or god forbid, years, to realize that. Even if you do make it to management, you do not make good money. Not even close. I’ve known so many managers who promote six-figures, but yet live in a shack. One of my previous managers does not even have internet at her home… You never “own” your own business, as the higher ups actually have considerable control of your office finance. You will not be an “entrepreneur”, as they promote it. Entrepreneurs work when and how they want. Here you have to do what they say, however and whenever they want. I have more freedom and I work at a 9-5 corporate American firm. There are so many other things I could write about, but I think that’s enough for now. If you’re going to do this, I would do it on your own accord, and I would only do it part time to make some quick bucks. Go to whatever territory you want, when you want. Now I’m not telling you to not listen to your managers when they tell you to do what they want... But what I am saying is do not listen to your managers when they tell you to do what they want. Have your own standards and goals and do not give them up for anyone. Lastly, there are tons of other little affiliates of Credico all around the nation, each with a different name. And they can change their names at will, so you’ll rarely ever catch them. But do look out for the parent company’s name, as those do not change. Other broker companies include Cydcor, DS-Max, and Smart Circle. But like all the other managers, you probably think you have sunk in too much time and effort to just quit now. I know you guys aren't making the kind of money you claim. And the money that you have right now, if you do, I bet your higher ups have their claws in. So a couple of observations I've made in the business to succeed. 1) Chicago is one of the hardest markets to recruit in. If you can go to another market, do so. Choose one that does not have such a high level of cost of living and with less job opportunity. South Jersey and Long Island are examples of such. The more desperate people are, the more likely they'll stick around because they have no other options but to suck it up and grind it out. 2) Start feeding your guys. Giving Days of O to the high rollers is fair, but not effective. Pick one or two guys and just give them all the Days of O no matter what. There are not enough Days of O to go around for everyone. If you give them to different people everyday, no one will make it to management and you'll get no overrides.
