I usually dont write these reviews, but as I reflect on 2023, I wanted to share here how excited I am for the future of the company and how great of a place Pocket Worlds is to work at. Here are some of the highlights of why: * We have a truly passionate, smart, and overall incredible team. This is my first time working in this industry and everyone is so talented and hard-working -- it really rubs off and makes you want to be better. * We are laser-focused on our mission and business goals and making progress each day to achieve them. This means you won't be joining a slow company bogged down by too much process. * We are building a platform that will genuinely help the world be more digitally connected and creative, all in the same place. Our users and creators always give us amazing feedback, showing how invested they are in our success. * I've learned so much since I joined, and I think this is true for most folks. If you like stretching yourself and are open to challenges, you will find yourself trying new things here all the time. The best part is we aren't punished if something goes wrong. We learn and keep going. This perspective comes straight from the founders and I love it. * We work shoulder-to-shoulder (virtually) and it feels like a very collaborative environment, despite us living all over the world. * The founders make time for you whenever you have questions or need help. They want everyone to be taken care of and are invested in your well-being and success. They cultivate creativity, and critical thinking and encourage us to think as owners. * Last but not least, expanding on my last point -- our comp is competitive and our benefits are great too. They were changed this year and it made a big difference. * I've spoken to people who have left who said the environment felt too intense. I think if you are motivated and aligned with what we are doing, you won't feel that way. Still, it's worth mentioning. * You are expected to perform well in your role and communicate effectively. Personally, I like the supportive environment with very direct feedback and expectations of accountability. Regarding the points mentioned in the 'Pros' section, it's important to note that this company may not suit everyone. The expectations are high, and the work environment is fast-paced, so it's important to be comfortable with taking ownership and being accountable for your work. Work Environment - There is lots of room for growth. Various fun opportunities are available to you if you are willing to learn, contribute, and grow. - You will be wearing multiple hats in your role, and even more if you are willing and capable to do so. - General environment and work ethics are great. Everyone is willing to humble themselves through feedback. Everyone is open minded and will listen to all ideas and concerns. Everyone is doing their part to help the team. - All coworkers are a pleasure to be around. HR does a great job at not hiring (plural vulgar noun of your choice). If you end up disliking it here, it won't be because of (plural vulgar noun of your choice). - Your mistakes won't define you, but how you choose to respond to them will. You will not be left to fend for yourself when you make a mistake, you will receive help and support when mistakes happen. Compensation - Benefits and policies are reasonably generous. As long as you treat company money like your money, there shouldn't be any issues. - Raises are given when earned. If you do a great job, they will be generous and timely. - Bonuses are very generous. There isn't more to say about this but I will because I did for everything else. More money! Flexibility - You can choose your work hours as long as you are attending the important meetings. - You are given freedom to figure out how to do your tasks. If you get your work done, no one's looking over your shoulders. Except for when you're working on the super cool stuff. Work Environment - Roles are not fully defined. Workload and daily tasks will change depending on what is needed and you will need to adapt to it. I wouldn't call this a lack of structure, but rather the company working together to accomplish the next big thing. Compensation - Salary is lower than expected, which is only a huge issue if you don't use your benefits and don't perform well enough to get raises/bonuses. Flexibility - The freedom can become overwhelming. You will be in charge of your tasks, how you do them, and when you do them. Occasionally, a high workload can become difficult to manage due to all these things. Poor management of your freedom will cause a bad work-life balance. You know what you need to succeed, and you're always empowered to find a solution that leans into your personal strengths. No one will ever make you feel small or defective for struggling. Running into an obstacle is a signpost to pivot around it, using YOUR strengths and skills. Folks will work with you to help you find a niche where you shine & feel comfy. 🟢 Transparency! Having previously been part of a big, corporate-style office, there's nothing more demoralizing than having your feedback treated like a futile scream into the void. The team and environment are by far the best reason to work at PocketWorlds! The team is fantastic to work with, fun, and always very supportive of each other. The environment is one where creativity flourishes, where you can have a great idea and you are listened to and could even start working on it the next day if it made sense. If you want to work somewhere where you opinion is valued, and your team is there to back you up, then PocketWorlds is the right place. Our environment is fast-paced, and I never experience bottlenecks in decision-making. I appreciated the responsibilities I was given shortly after joining the team. However, it may be stressful for those who prefer to overthink everything. The interview process took exactly 10 days, from the HR screening call to a call with the CEO. The steps included an HR screening call, a call with the CTO, a technical assessment, a call with two other software engineers, and a call with the CEO. The onboarding process was seamless and positive, providing a smooth integration into the team, understanding of how the company works, the technology it uses, and the benefits it provides. The company provides several benefits, including a co-working stipend, provision of working devices, and a monthly fitness allowance. Nothing I can think of, but I believe that pace of the environment might not be for everyone.
