Long Road Ahead for KalioCommerce
|
|
Great opportunity for someone who is either new to the industry or wants a stable position as a code monkey.
As a developer, you will learn about eCommerce development, basic seo strategies, etc.
Entire team is dedicated to making every project a success. Company has proven to deliver sizable projects with very tight deadlines, with complex problems.
Upper management utterly committed to the success of the company.
|
Constant constructive criticism not balanced with any positive reinforcements.
Culture is entirely based on your ability to maximize revenue for the company through your work hours.
As a developer, you will not learn any of the latest frameworks / methods. The system is built on a proprietary platform that utilizes their own tagging language.
Upper management is stretched too thin with responsibilities and high expectations. Any guidance / directions given by Upper Management seems like a moving target.

Left the company due to all the following reasons. I have no ill feelings towards anyone at the company. My hopes is that they read this as this is my honest assessment of what needs to change as a whole if the company wants to start on a path of success and fruition.
Please incorporate some development process for bigger projects. This will alleviate the constant back and forth between CLIENT and KALIO, which causes time wasted, going way over budget, and unnecessary frustrations from both client and team members.
Better system to track projects, time management, and correspondence. The current system(s) in place is very inefficient.
Most importantly, start to work on your company culture.
Upper management lacks any emotional intelligence / connection with their team members. They need to bridge this gap. Though everyone should be pulling their weight in the company, the work environment is currently setup to promote finger pointing / blame, instead of taking care of one another and leveling each other up.

Hard To Recommend...
|
|
Casual work environment, free coffee, decent web-based platform.
|
Struggling business that has suffered from significant lay-offs over the last year (2016-17). It's not a place you expect to work at long term, very few do. It might be a good 6-24 month opportunity for someone looking for experience. I just can't sit here and honestly recommend Kalio as a place to work, outside of the previous caveat.

Employee exit-feedback doesn't seem to be taken seriously, your platform needs to be tailored differently for client ease-of-use, it has always had potential. Dictator-like management style is a huge problem and will continue to be until it's addressed.

Move on to the next job ad.
|
|
- Fully stocked fridge, including free coffee, pop and snacks.
- Personal and professional milestone celebrations.
- Very little supervision; very flexible.
- Shift flexibility.
- Nice work/life balance.
- Motorized stand-up desks.
- Generous amount of starting PTO.
- Monthly potlucks.
|
- Proprietary code! Cannot stress how awful this is as a developer.
- No work-from-home.
- Steep learning curve.
- eCommerce platform is not user-friendly or intuitive.
- No version control.
- No modern workflow.
- Developers are expected to talk regularly with clients.
- Main shareholder thinks the employees are, "entitled".
- Assumes everyone is available 24/7.
- Proprietary code (twice, I know).
- Layoffs
- Pay freezes
This was the best job I've to date until the layoffs started. They laid off four people within a month and a half; three of which were key members. They continue to outsource their work instead of cutting unnecessary costs to keep current employees. Since the layoffs, the atmosphere has changed significantly. Most employees are looking or have left, including those that have been there for many many years.
Kalio does not seem to care about acquiring new clients after losing a few this past year. A lot clients have expressed their unhappiness towards Kalio regarding the turn around time on requests and projects. Many of these requests have been requested by management to be completed after hours in order to get them done with no compensation.
With all that said, I really did enjoy my time at Kalio and saw myself working there for many years. Unfortunately, that time was cut short and I felt like I needed to move on both technically and financially. It is going downhill quick and it's mostly due to their main shareholder making all the calls.

To the main shareholder, take responsibility for the lack of profits. Find creative ways to save money. Laying off your best people is not the answer.

Stay clear of this place
|
|
Free food and drinks in the kitchen. Little to no supervision. eCommerce industry is a fun area to focus as most clients need to spend money to grow.
|
They are cutting back on everything and are no longer investing any money into building the company. No marketing at all anymore (last post to blog/twitter long time ago). They haven't signed any new clients recently and others are leaving to other eCommerce platforms. Most employees are looking to get out or have already left. They are just in maintenance mode and spending as little as possible to support the dwindling client base (offshore resources). No pay raises in years.

Great first office experience
|
|
Was hired as an intern through the co-op program at Cincinnati State and was nervous about my first experience in an office environment, but it turned out to be a pretty cool and laid-back experience. Did lots of manual website testing, data entry, and report creating -- nothing too exciting, but the kind of stuff you can do with headphones on and not be too stressed out over. My direct supervisor was incredibly kind and helpful. It was an intimate, friendly atmosphere, and at a great location where I never had to worry about parking even if I was late.
I kept my head down, did what I was told, and got out after six months with some practical experience to put on my resume. Never had much contact with upper management, but what little I did have didn't leave me with any outrageously negative impressions.
|
I can see how certain things might have worn on me if I had been there longer, and was in a more conspicuous position. There's certainly some tension among the support engineers; and work/life balance seems to be a major issue for some, especially middle management. But for me, what I did, and what I wanted out of it -- no complaints.

Great place to learn. Not so great people in management.
|
|
You learn A LOT.
|
You work A LOT. On call, 3 am, 4am phone calls. Not once did management think about offering comp time for being up a couple hours in the middle of the night. Since it's salary, no OT. The people when I was there were great. Management was, not so much. The company, at the time I was there, seemed way more focus on the eCommerce side of the business, not so much on the IT side of it. Management has great ideas for team morale but they're hardly ever brought to life. Team bonding is great, since it's out of office. They focus on how much they can make and don't seem to car how hard they work you. Many days I worked 12 hour shifts, weekend work, not one comp day was ever offered.

Great place to start!
|
|
This place is a great one if you are new to retail ecommerce. They have several mid-sized client who are doing well and want to try new things. They push the envelope of the company. Office culture is great as well.
|
Still has a start-up mentality so processes are still a work-in progress but if you love that, this place is for you.
