OSHA violations galore in crumbling bio buildings; did little to protect us from Covid-19
|
K-State GRAs and GTAs are treated differently in each department. Some departments have sufficient funding, but my department, Biology, has struggled to stay afloat. Bushnell Hall is crumbling; the pipes leak and water mains burst every couple of months. Ackert Hall's teaching and research spaces are also outdated and crumbling. Most of the faculty are wonderful mentors but there are several bad professors that need to get axed for the way they treat students. K-State's biology graduate program is unique in that ALL students, regardless of whether they're supported on a GTA or GRA fellowship, are REQUIRED to teach one section EVERY. SINGLE. SEMESTER. Grant agencies get angry when they find out the GRAs they're supporting still have to spend 10-35 hrs every week just on teaching alone. At least we can put all this teaching experience on our CVs.
The university did not take enough precautions to protect us from Covid-19 and I am 95% certain I caught the virus while teaching in-person, despite everyone wearing masks.

Great Student Job
|
I loved working in the library and the staff was helpful when I needed help with anything. I was able to study and work on my schooling at work. The pay wasn't great but it was ideal for a first year student.

Positive change environment
|
During the time I worked there, it was a constant state of change and adaptation and it was a new experience for everyone on the team. The management did a great job of listening to the team and working through concerns that resulted from the constant changes. The only negative was actually outside of our specific area - the other folks in our work area felt like they weren't getting as much attention because their area wasn't changing and so it created significant tensions between management. Those issues were also addressed well though and I believe culture across the board has improved.

Working for k-state helped me get out of my shell for my freshman year of college. Not only did they make sure I was on top of my studies but they gave me the flexible hours to work and make money as well as meet new people.

The program is focused on research only. For graduate students this is acceptable but don't expect much from undergraduate 'researchers' (even upperclassmen).
