Half of the anchors/reporters are great to work with. The work environment is toxic, not to mention windowless. The PAs are miserable and take it out on the rest of the staff. Not a lot of upward mobility. Didn't enjoy working for Lori. If you apply yourself, ask questions and get your hands dirty then you will learn a lot. Reporters will let you go out on the field with them, if there is room. Producers can also give you writing assignments and you might actually get to hear your work on air. Most of the staff is friendly if you are professional and hard-working. I had a lot of great experiences with this internship and learned a lot of skills that I will apply in an out of a newsroom. Some reporters and anchors can be a bit stand-offish, but that is just the nature of the beast. It is a high stress job and we are dealing with television personalities here -- they can be a bit much. Most experiences were pleasant and educational, but others were quite discouraging and disheartening. Lots of opportunities to write if you ask producers. Going out with photographers will give you the most experience reporting. Reporters and photographers will sometimes let you shoot stand-ups if there is extra time. You may get the opportunity to shoot a cut-in at the anchor desk if you ask. The more assertive you are, the better. Since you cant do much hands-on, always ask questions. Ask as many as you can about the business. Get inside their heads and take advantage of the professionals that are before you. This is one of the top markets in the United States before reporters go national, so take advantage of it. Since the internship is unpaid, you arent really allowed to do much which is disappointing. The production side of the station is union controlled so they will NOT let you touch a thing. Some producers and photographers WILL play favorites so be prepared. It IS competitive in that sense. As a male intern, I felt I was denied going out with photographers many times because I wasn't a female to gawk at. Some photographers do not like interns and will lie so they don't have to take you out with them. Overall, I learned a lot and tried really really hard to make the best of it, but at times it was frustrating driving all the way to an internship to not get to do anything all day. 0.0 3.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 611606 Open Don't treat us like we don't exist. For many of us this is our first internship. I get it. It's a fast paced industry, and the internship is unpaid anyways. But at least structure the internship to get us started in the beginning instead of telling us to just "walk in and grab a computer." It's still very disorganized. It's almost like this passive aggressiveness I felt between the staff and the interns. Plenty of people to help the learning process, even in the fast paced environment. The personality of some of the anchors can be hard to adjust to. One person treated the interns with little respect and had no time to help or share insights.
