Kent State University is a great place to feel that you are contributing to society - leadership believes in the mission of inclusivity and preparing students for success after graduation. In my experience the culture is relaxed, collegial, and just about everyone is invested in the success of the organization and its students. It's a big system and attracts great faculty and staff - I made many lifelong friends in my time there. Cons: There is some difficulty in advancing internally - availability of positions in a career track may be low, the requirements for advancement aren't clear, and a drive to reduce costs may be stifling a drive to create opportunity for employees. Promotions are subject to a maximum salary percentage increase - so if you start at an entry level position it is also very difficult to keep parity with external market offers. Finally, It's a big organization, and change moves slowly - this could be frustrating for some but comforting for others. The student body was very diverse, and figuring out a method to reach all students can be challenging. I was assigned to teach a few subjects which I did not feel qualified to teach. A&P and Genetics can be hard subjects to find experienced lecturers, so I guess somebody had to teach these. Overall I felt supported by the mangers and teaching at Kent State was fun. The culture is very slow to change. It is very hierarchical. If you have a good manager PTO and sick days come easily, a bad manager and you're treated like a prisoner. Had many good colleagues. Compensation was abysmal; the only upside was the free college education, but considering they were working us like dogs for peanuts, it wasn't worth it. Absolutely dysfunctional teams. Lots of workplace bullying going on, between supervisors and team leaders and team leaders and housekeepers and housekeepers against each other. The union has no teeth. The supervisors spend a lot of time in meetings and bring nothing to the workers aside demands, criticism and time-share salesman style pep talks. Yes, that's the bottom of the food chain of the academic world, so the pay wasn't great. It could be difficult to get more than a class to teach per semester, but they'd usually find something for me. The work culture was supportive and there was maximal freedom in designing course goals. Overall, a great experience. It gave enough time to get the bulk of your work done before students showed up in buildings. You basically work unsupervised the whole shift unless you call a supervisor because you need something. Hardest part of the job is when someone calls off and you have to cover their work and also your own. ( and people call off soooo much!) Or when you constantly get moved to other buildings because your co-workers haven’t been doing their job so you’re expected to clean up their messy building. If you don’t mind that, then this is the job for you. benefits are awesome!
