The people: intelligent, engaging, kind and creative. So long as you make the effort, there is a lot to learn and a lot to gain from each person on the KHJ team.
The work: there is something to be said about working in the diagnostics arena- because it truly is life saving work. The real estate sector is also incredibly rewarding, having the opportunity to breathe life into neighborhoods and communities.

Untapped potential: a lot is currently being worked through on the leadership side of the equation, and the intention for improvement is there. Sometimes there are missteps and sometimes the “support” rungs of the ladder (coordinators, associates, sr. Associates, and even directors) can feel overworked and unheard. However, there has been a lot of effort by and with the leadership team to course-correct and provide more opportunity for growth and contribution which I’d like to believe has improved since I left.
The leadership team has also been putting in a great deal of work on how they relate to and work with each other which I can only assume will cause a trickle down effect (in a positive way). Candidly, tensions in management were causing tensions throughout the team as a whole. But as the leaders have been turning inward, particularly during Covid, there has been a lot of improvement in this area. This is evidence of a leadership team that really does desire to have a better, more rewarding culture for their employees.

KHJ is a great place to learn and grow. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, a point-of-view and want to drive the direction of your client work and provide leadership, this is a great place to do it. Management is open to new ideas, very inclusive and respectful, particularly to junior employees and appreciative of hard work and creative thinking. Company also attracts friendly, driven, thoughtful talent. You will likely become good friends with the people on your team and every week people get together to hang out, have drinks or do something related to culture club.
Ultimately you get what you put into this experience. Unlike most agencies, you have a lot of flexibility in acquiring skills, trying new things, working on different types of clients and industries. And the range of work as well as client industries vary quite a bit.
Compensation and benefits are in line with what you expect out of an agency of this size. On top of this, you get sponsored company events and lunches, probably more than you might expect you'd typically get access to.
Location has really improved over the years -- dramatic growth has led to more and more places to go to lunch, run errands, hang out after work.

Organization needs to adapt to growing size/teams. While hands-on leadership can be beneficial, there should be a greater balance of trust vs. all the details.
Silver line transportation is going to be an ever increasing issue as during rush hour there are so many commuters it becomes difficult to get on a bus.

This summer I was fortunate to have the opportunity to intern at KHJ. During my time there, I was able to learn so much from some of the most talented marketing professionals in the industry. As mentors, they were very helpful and had so much insight to give on the marketing industry and careers in business; they took my goals for my internship and involved me in projects that led me to learn and experience what I was aiming for. The company functions well as a collaborative team and each individual works extremely well together. The culture and environment is unlike any other in such a positive way, they're always communicating with each other and coming up with creative ideas and innovative solutions. I was able to take so much away from this internship and would be so lucky to work for a company with such great people and a phenomenal culture.

The commute into the city was tough but still a good experience to have! As for the internship itself and the company there weren't any downsides.

Good place to learn, but not a great long-term option
|
|
-Because of the small size, great opportunities for younger associates to take on a high level of responsibility and get great client-facing experience if they prove themselves
-Fast-paced and exciting work environment, a really good place to ease yourself into the agency world
-Teammates really do become best friends here, and many of the managers truly care about their employees and do everything they can for them
-Depending on your team's focus, there is the opportunity to work on very interesting and meaningful clients

-Overall feeling of distrust from upper management, which leads to unnecessary micromanagement and over-involvement
-People are extremely quick to throw each other under the bus and toss blame around during times of crisis to protect themselves rather than take a team approach to problem-solving
-It is very easy for younger associates to plateau here once you reach a certain level, limited opportunities to grow and develop your personal career
-Not forward-thinking or digitally focused enough, needs to embrace the future and be open to evolving

The politics need to be kept behind closed doors and away from other employees. There are constantly arguments and fights among upper management that are extremely inappropriate to take place in front of other employees, during meetings, etc, leaving the office vibe feeling pretty unprofessional and very catty. Employee turnover won't decrease until this stops, its an unhealthy environment.
Need to put more focus on individual development and keep striving to be more forward-thinking so that the agency doesn't get left behind or lose out on interesting and new talent and/or clients.
