A company with great people and values.
I love that I get to work from home. I can work any time at all as long as there are documents in the queue. I'm a full-time freelancer and work with Kibin as often as I can. It's a great starting gig for the newbie and a pretty fantastic supplemental opportunity for those of us with a few years under our belts. It's a small group of super cool people doing awesome work. I am very happy to be part of the organization.
The only negative things I can even think of are related to the ebb-and-flow nature of the industry and is not specific to Kibin. I cannot complain!

I love this company!
I am so happy I found Kibin and was welcomed onto the team. I love the ability to work from home, the flexibility, the platform and structure, and especially the management/team members! Everyone is helpful and professional, and it's nice to be easily connected through the online communication system. The compensation and ability to move ahead is fair and motivating. I also love the little bonuses and perks to reward good work!
As with any type of project-based work, the workflow isn't always guaranteed. There might be a lot of documents one day, and nothing available on another day at the same time. This averages out by picking up more work when it's available, but I'm also sure that as Kibin grows, the workload will increase and become steadier.

Lots of Work and a GREAT Atmosphere!
Helping students improve their writing is pretty amazing and I love the camaraderie between editors, which is very different from other sites. At Kibin, I feel like a valued part of the team and I take a lot of the pride in the work we do!
The pay isn't always great, but the leaderboard points help make up for that somewhat and we did get a raise a little over a year ago :). I can see that we're still growing though, and I'm excited for what the future brings!

Life-Saver!
After two years of hectic retail, awful commutes, and very nearly wasting away in a dark, cold cubicle (and not saving any money) I decided I needed something new that would give me time at home and time to work on artistic projects (and eat!). Kibin literally saved my life. I make very decent money for my lifestyle (over $100 a week) and I can choose when to work! I work from home and I am finally catching up on my projects. I can supplement my editing $$$ with online selling and art commissions.
Kibin is so very trustworthy and reliable. I was accepted to other proofreading sites, but they would either decide when to send me work (never) or clients would pick me from a list of thousands (fat chance). At Kibin, I can see the work come in and I can pick it myself. A great structure! I started out seeing not as much, but once I snagged my first doc I sky-rocketed, getting promoted very quickly and earning more per edit. Since this is my job, I am committed!
I love the Leaderboard! It's fun and motivating, and I can get a bonus if I get enough extra points. The management is very friendly and understanding. The freelance editors aren't pressured to work if they can't. Overall, a great place to work if you're like me and need a very flexible work schedule and the freedom to make your own choices and work wherever you want. I'm so glad I found Kibin, I don't know where I'd be without it.
The site does have brain-farts sometimes! If you let management know they will fix it.
The only thing about Kibin is that it's hard to make a consistent schedule with it. You can pick when to work, but if you pick a 5-hour doc at 8pm, you're up until 1am! If you pick an 12-hour doc at 8pm, you're up at 6 to finish it (at least you can nap after!). The turn-around times can be restricting, but that's part of the process. You can take a day (or a week) off whenever you want, but you won't get paid unless you work pretty hard. Some ESL docs are almost unintelligible. That's freelancing for you! But this does not discourage me, I just learned when to pick docs so I won't be up all night and napping all day. Really not many cons for me!

Terrible pay and structure
The people are very nice. They're also responsive which is more than I can say for other online tutoring and editing companies.
Their sample process is tough and almost too much. It's long and tedious and they're extremely picky. Yeah, that's good in terms of business and making sure your editors are qualified, but annoying and not worth it when your paid terribly for your work. $3 for 500 words?? Not worth anyone's time.

We are very nice :-) and our editing test is designed to be difficult. This speaks to the quality of our service and the caliber of our editing team. And I really think these should be viewed as pros rather than cons. Our top priority is ensuring we provide a high quality service, and that starts with having extremely talented editors.\r\n\r\nBut there is one aspect of your review that is not truthful. If you did indeed pass these tests and work for us, something I unfortunately can't verify due to your anonymity, you would know that it is actually impossible to earn just $3 for a 500 word edit.\r\n\r\nThe absolute minimum you would ever earn as a new editor on a 500 word edit is $5.25 -- this is worst case scenario for a brand new editor. That same brand new editor could earn as high as $7.43 for a 500 word edit if the edit was requested by the customer as a 3-hour delivery. \r\n\r\nOne of our more seasoned editors would earn even more. For someone that's been with us awhile and built their editing history on Kibin, they would earn $6.13 on the low end and $8.66 on the high end. We reward editors with revenue share increases the more they edit with us.\r\n\r\nSo while I do appreciate your feedback, I would appreciate it even more if you took care to ensure you were leaving an accurate review of our company, policies, and pay rates. \r\n\r\nIf there's something you aren't happy about you know you can always reach out to our team at team@kibin.com\r\n\r\nBest of luck,\r\n\r\nTravis", "responseOriginal": null, "countNotHelpful": 0}]

Love Kibin's Gibbons
Great team atmosphere. A chat room keeps everyone easily connected. Editors check in often and are available to help other editors.
Owners/managers stay in touch with the freelancers.
Recently, they have adjusted their pay structure to be more competitive with other employers. There is a leaderboard with monthly payouts and a little friendly competition.
Work availability ebbs and flows with school semesters. This is a known part of freelancing. Fall seems to be the best time for schools. The spring semester started off slow but is picking up after a couple of weeks.
I’d like to have better insight into the customers who have Favorited me.

Low Pay and Poor Company Structure
Kibin is one of the many proofreading mills offering its services on the web. The benefit is that you get to take the work you want and leave what you don’t want (when the work is there). All the editors are vetted carefully and know their stuff. The managing editors and owner are kind, and it was always fun to chat daily with other editors and listen to silly banter and inside jokes. There is a friendly competition that allows you to get a small monetary bonus if you rank onto the Leader Board. It might still be there.
In terms of editing/proofreading mills, it could certainly be worse. They do care about making their customers happy, and I heard they even offered a scholarship at one point.
Despite the nice people, the company’s structure is illogical. Kibin must be scared that its editors will poach clients. Why else would the infrastructure be built in such a way that you cannot directly contact the client except through the managing editors? I never even knew whether my writer was male or female. Clients can only leave limited instructions for what they want edited, like grammar, punctuation, flow, etc. Alas, they don’t have enough room to specify what they wanted exactly, so half the time it was a guessing game. If you guessed right, the client would (hopefully) leave good feedback. If you guessed incorrectly (‘cause you’re an editor, and not a mind reader), the client would get pissed off and leave negative feedback. It doesn’t do any good to refute it because even if you are right, the negative feedback remains for all to see. I suspect this is a purposeful tactic because you are paid based on the amount of positive and negative feedback you acquire.
Speaking of payment, you will never get paid more than a little over a cent per word. In comparison, an editor with one year of experience should be paid about three cents a word. I know Kibin has to cover marketing costs, hosting, development, etc., but ultimately, it’s the editors providing the actual services that keep clients coming back, and not the pretty graphics or blog posts. To break it down, if you take the time to edit a 1500-word essay (about six pages) thoroughly for $13—spending about two to three hours doing an initial copy edit, coupled with a line edit, and then a final proofread in conjunction with an editing software to serve as your final eagle eye—it all comes out to a little over $5 an hour. Since many documents are written by ESL writers, you will also have to do rewrites most of the time to make it decipherable. It is definitely not worth it; you might as well mow lawns for $10 an hour *and* get to spend more time with your family.

Kibin, if you value your editors, pay them what their services are worth, please. Also, allow clients and editors to interact directly like actual editors and writers do in real life, instead of this wall between them. This game of email telephone got old since yesterday. Plus, that is not what the actual editing process looks like, and after speaking with two authentic copy editors who chuckled at Kibin’s process, I realized that I could never grow as a copy editor with this company in its present state.

They do a thorough job of vetting editors. People are very nice, and they seem well organized. There's generally someone around to answer questions.
Editors get work by waiting for documents to show up on the Kibin site. Each document has a pay rate, generally between $4-$10 depending on the amount of words and the deadline. Many of the papers are written by non-native speakers and are difficult to decipher. If you take the time you need to do a thorough job, you will make less than minimum wage. Often much less. They justify this by saying that sometimes you get "easy" papers, so it averages out. This was not my experience.
