Coming from a different environment, I really appreciate the culture Kickstarter has built and how we treat our employees but I do think it’s created a sense of entitlement here. It’s disappointing hearing fellow employees complain at times because I’m not sure they understand how great things at Kickstarter are. Especially during a time when companies are laying off thousands of people.

- The CEO has a large platform and brand that is positioning the company well, more than I think people realize. If the company improves, this type of visibility will be positive for everyone who works here. While some people feel this is not good, I think it brings a lot of value. I think the CEO works hard to balance this. He is at every all-hands meeting, he has a true open-door policy, and he responds in all our Slack channels...he does more than I have seen other CEOs do.
- Having a Black CEO has been amazing, as a person of color, I appreciate this deeply.
- The leadership team has had a lot of change in the past few years and it feels like the company is getting on track, a lot of bad leaders are gone now.
- We have an important product that can change the lives of many people, if you want to be a part of making the world a better place or purpose-driven work, Kickstarter will make sure you feel and understand you are a part of something bigger than you
- Kickstarter will support growth but the company is small so sometimes you can only get promoted if someone leaves. It could be a good stepping stone though (if you are on the right team/with the right manager).
- Four day work week and fully remote work is a plus

- Lacks experienced managers which is hard for some of my peers
- Feels like there are some cliques between old people and new people
- Some people who have been here a long time are negative and I avoid them

The Kickstarter union is incredible, and had all of our backs during 2020 when the company laid off almost 50% of all employees. All of the folks who work there are incredible, and are very kind. During the pandemic, those who were still employed helped laid off former coworkers network and find work. Lots of visible queer people there.

Really hope that management is better since 2020 (And I've seen there's been changes!). Laying off almost 50% of staff during a global pandemic after saying "things were going well" only weeks prior was honestly a bit traumatic.

- Committed to good work / life balance with 4DWW - Wall-to-wall union - Externally facing value props are strong - 3 stars overall because it's easy
|
- Website is trapped in 2012, efforts to change this are roundly squashed - Virtually impossible to iterate due to an abundance of abandoned third-party tools, red tape, and poor, cyclical communication - Average time to ship a basic feature is 9 months to a year (if you're lucky) - CEO spends his time doing interviews, public speaking events, and sponsored content for big brands rather than investing in problem solving at Kickstarter. Overly concerned with brand perception vs. platform functionality. Publicly touts the importance of feedback but privately punishes employees that take him at his word on that - Blatant favoritism towards certain employees in everything from hiring to promotions to permissions controls to who gets celebrated for their contributions.
