It's an okay job to have on the side. I didn't agree with a lot of their philosophies, so it was difficult to handle some of the unruly toddlers. This is specific to my location, but I had a terrible manager who was passive aggressive and didn't know how to communicate. Co-workers were for the most part fun to work with. They have a REALLY shady/weird way of paying their employees. From day one, you are told that you will be paid "per class." And yet- our paystub tells otherwise. According to our paystubs it looks like we get paid $19-$21 an hour. But what they don't explain on our paycheck is that we only got paid for the 45 minute window that you actually taught a class. As a lead we got $17 per class and as an assistant we were paid $14.50 per CLASS. We were required to be at Kidville 30 minutes before the class to prepare, and then required to stay after 10-15 minutes to clean up. We gave Kidville 90 minutes worth of labor, but were only paid for half of it (the 45 min class). Meaning: we didn’t make $20/hr like it says on our pay stub. We actually worked 90 minutes as a rate of $9.60/hour (And this was in a location where minimum wage was $11/hr). So even though the federal and state governments believe we got paid well above minimum wage, assistants didn’t even make the minimum wage. (Leads would really be making $11.33/hr). That’s the financial “gains” for the time we actually worked. Those 90 minutes. But we didn’t just teach one class- we taught multiple. And there was often a small amount of time in between that you didn’t get paid for, but also had no where to go and couldn’t work anywhere else in that time. You give up a LOT of time to do this job. Take a normal teaching day: - Get to work at 8:45 AM for a 9:15 AM class. - Prep (unpaid) for 30 minutes. - Teach 9:15-10:00 AM (paid at the $17 or $14.50 rate) - Clean up (unpaid) from 10-10:15 AM. - Go to the break room and sit (unpaid) until your next class. -- if you are lucky the class is actually right after the previous one, at 10:15a so you can get your time's worth. But more likely that class is taught by another teacher and your next class isn't until 11:15 AM (or later). So you sit unpaid- waiting the 30 minutes (or more) until you work again. - 10:45 AM prep for class (unpaid) - 11:15 AM Teach for 45 minutes - 12-12:15 PM Clean up (unpaid) You have now given the company 3.5 hours of your time (not including travel to and from Kidville- just the hours on site when you can’t work for anyone else). And in this time, you have been paid for two 45 min classes. As an assistant, that’s $29 ($14.50*2). But you have been at work since 8:45 AM. Yes, you had a 30 min break but with that short of a time frame, you really can’t leave. For argument’s sake, say we take that half hour out. $29 for 4 hours of work is a value of $9.60/hour. Most classes are only two days a week, so if you have the same schedule, that’s $58 a week, or $232 a month GROSS- this is before taxes. Even if you taught 4 days a week, your monthly total is only $464/month gross. Assuming a 15% tax rate, that’s $394.40. The average rent here is $600/month. Working 16 hours a week for a month – a part time job, wouldn’t even pay your rent, let alone any other financial responsibilities. So find a second job to fill in the gaps, right? Maybe. Often you don’t have the same class schedule every day. Monday and Wednesday might be the 9:15 and 11:15 AM classes, but on Tuesday and Thursday you might be scheduled for afternoon classes. Meaning, any second job you have has to fit in that altered schedule. CONCLUSION: There’s a reason there is such high turnover with this company.
