Unproductive and sad.
|
My house parents were exhausted and bitter. As their assistant, they did not train me. The communication with them was non existent. They treated me with punity instead of as a peer. The youth picked up on this and it undermined my authority. There were constant contradictions in communication with house parents.
The worst part, there was no program wide policy for bullying. It was Lord of the Flies including management, houseparents, youth and pets. Administration unable to improve with my relationship with houseparents.
I was so sad for the youth whom I was there for. Unfair treatment.
I believe they are doing their best. Just not good enough.
Learned I was paid less than a man hires for same job at same time. I am a woman studying for my masters at the time. He was a career bus driver.

Great Cause, Deplorable Leadership

After training you are left to do your job. This is not good as the office can be non-responsive and the on-call number goes to voicemail. It can take multiple hours to receive a call back,if they even call back. Sometimes replacement staff doesn't arrive by the end of your shift and you must stay on regardless of personal commitments until replacement staff arrives. Some days house parents end up working two or three shifts without relief staff. The homes are not as well maintained as they should be. Maintenance can be rude and difficult to work with at times. Overall working with the youth is great, management seems to be a necessary evil.

Working with foster children and abused women who feel they are neglected and worthless.

Poor organizational leadership, non-existent communication throughout the organization, doesn't embrace the Christian values it says it exists to fulfill.

Parents are sacrificed for numbers. Wages are so low that having quality help is a hit or miss prospect. Be prepared to leave everything on the table.

Great mission, unorganized management
|
Teens that are part of the program need more therapy (one-on-one and group sessions) than is provided. The work load for each employee is taxing, especially with some of the diagnosis different youth have. With there being teens with more extreme diagnosis, there needs to be more training for the staff who directly works with the teens, otherwise the staff member is stuck in a situation where they have a teen having a mental breakdown and is not able to do anything. And there is not much support from administration.

Fulfilling Work
|
You have to remember it is a non-profit organization and all are wearing multiple hats, however it is very fulfilling to know you may make an impact in one persons life. Very busy, can be very stressful but remind yourself of the bigger picture.

Double Standards from Admin
|
The Administration had a set of rules to follow that forever strayed from the policy and procedures manual. They allowed certain staff to make rules while they hid in their office. Everytime a donor would bring food, certain staff would load it and take it to the director's home leaving very little for the residents. The pantry on one of the campuses would also be raided for use of staff. I'd check into funding of the director's personal mission at her residence and see exactly where it's coming from.
Some staff also knowingly smoke and text/call from personal phones as well as the director allowed her relative to live at the facility while other staff gets reprimanded for things not made clear in the policy book that wasn't even signed until a day prior to termination.

Great Farm Job
|
I learned many new skills and develop lasting, healthy relationships while working as a farm hand. I had many odd jobs that kept me focused and provided enough change to keep me interested. I would definitely recommend this as a first job for other youth.
