You might leave your schedule open for work and hear nothing, only to check your email the next day to see that you have work due the following morning. Communication is a major concern. Often work will be assigned to other writers, but not to you, for no apparent reason. Occasionally Email turn around is fast, and fixing problems is easy, but often you won't hear back from an Email for 6 or more hours, and when deadlines are 24 hours after assignments are posted, 6 hours is a really inconvenient amount of time to waste. The management is also afraid of admitting mistakes. I got flagged for missed deadlines a few months back, and yet never received the assignments in the first place. The management was unwilling to figure out the problem, nor even admit the possibility that there was one in the first place. Pay is also a huge issue, perhaps the biggest. At one penny per word, you're going to make about $1.50 per post. And each post takes about ten minutes, once you've settled into a rhythm. That means that after months of increasing your turn around rate, about the best you can do here is $9 an hour. And every week or so you'll run into some assignments that require up to a half an hour of research. And yet you'll still only make $1.50 for that half-hour. Training materials are also a garbled mess, and most writers will learn on the job. Much of the training information is repeated too many times and in too many ways that it ceases to make intuitive sense, other training information is glossed over even though it's vital. If the training materials were much more clearly organized, that could stop people from having to spend months to get their turnaround speed up. If you working for $9 an hour is bad, consider that for the first few months, or at least the first few weeks, the turnaround speed is far worse than the speed which nets you $1.50 for ten minutes of work. If it takes you just 20 minutes on average per assignment, then you're talking about less than $5 an hour to start. That said, it's not as if this job was ever able to be a primary source of income. The work was intermittent and would often get assigned at the last minute. We were expected to have it done in less than 24 hours, which is frankly impossible to do if you have anything going on that you have to plan for. The pay is also very low for the amount of work you wind up doing, and the editors and management get onto you for writing the descriptions incorrectly because the rules are contradictory and they can't seem to decide which set of rules they want you to follow. In training, the editor was nice and professional. The owner was also nice and professional. The pay is poor. In order to succeed, you must have a paid-description to Grammarly or some other grammar software. Or, you better be excellent at grammar. The company says free grammar is fine, but from what I found, that was not good enough. Also, the writers have to do a TON a research on the product and sometimes the original manufacturer website does not have enough information.That can take a long time to gather that information.
