Motivational but frustrating
Working for an educational software company is very motivating. You can go to work knowing you're working to make a positive social impact.
The environment can be highly political. High turnover. Raises can be difficult to obtain.

Think more about where the company as a whole wants to take the product and stay focused on goals related to that. Don't let one or two clients control the vision of the company.

Acquisition is the only goal
Surrounded by talented people and a team vibe exists. amplifire, the product, has the potential to be very useful and successful.
The management team is its own worst enemy. They don't listen to staff and they believe it's okay to act impulsively on their ideas without following product procedures that are in place. They often spend a great deal of resources on features that aren't worthwhile. They continue to put too much pressure on the engineering group. As a result, the product is made up of a hodge podge of mvp features that aren't cohesive. There is never the time to circle back and make them as good as they could be.

Do less, but do it better. Fix the culture. If you won't give women an opportunity to succeed, don't waste their time - just stop hiring them.

Fantastic place with a great mission
Wonderful management, nice location, talented developers, a laid-back culture, great software, fantastic customers, and a mission that makes a difference in the world. I really miss working there full-time. The CEO really cares about education, and the synergy among different parts of the company is great. The team is going places!

Great place to work
KnowledgeFactor is a fantastic little company. The client list says it all: Pearson Education, The Princeton Review, and CompTIA are among our most famous clients, and I'm proud to work here for that reason alone. The management is also amazingly great here. Everyone is really easygoing, but they strike a perfect balance between flexibility on the one hand, while keeping a fire under us on the other hand so that we have guidance and motivation to get work done. I've never felt uncomfortable talking to management, even about serious topics. Agile scrum is implemented well here, with just the right amount of rigor and flexibility, and adherence to the core principle of continuous improvement. The software is fantastic and something to really be proud of. Weekly free massages, bi-weekly catering, beer kegs, a basketball, free Orange Juice, milk, snacks and tea only sweeten the deal. There's also a very interesting neuroscience and psychology library on campus. Most importantly, it's a drama-free environment. Office politics are never a problem, and people say what's on their mind. Passion for the future of online education really serves as a uniting force among the team.
The bright overhead fluorescent lighting was probably the only major problem I had. I also worry that we might see some turnover in the engineering team in the near future, because as far as I can tell the management hasn't been aggressively keeping up with the quickly rising market cost of software engineers (see advice to management). The database schema is a bit confusing, but it's not the worst I've seen. Also the documentation for our web services layer leaves something to be desired in terms of its clarity and accessibility. None of these problems offset the pros, however. Definitely a 5 star employer.

Make a darkened space available to engineers who prefer working without the unpleasantness of cheap corporate-style overhead fluorescent lights. Give aggressive raises to the engineering team every few months, especially the core performers. Among today's young coding talent, yesteryear's culture of long-term loyalty to one company is a thing of the past. Giving generous raises will cost KF less in the long term, because if people leave, then the higher salary will need to be given to the replacement anyway if you want to get someone competent.. and then they'll need to be trained. As of early 2015, this is a serious problem in the company, even though the management does not realize it yet. It's not that management has done anything wrong, however, just simply that the older generation does not fully understand the market forces at play in today's tech world. This is a problem in many software companies that causes a generally high rate of turnover in the industry. I would say that KnowledgeFactor's turnover is below average because it is after all a fantastic place to work.
