Leadership is really flexible and supportive of you whenever life throws you a curve ball. There are definitely things that need improvement in terms of work environment and inter-team communication protocols and expectations. But overall, a really enjoyable place to work. There seems to be a leftover expectation from some people who interact with the engineering team frequently from when the company was smaller that the engineering team members will just dive into every problem at any hour of the day, regardless of who is actually oncall. It can take a fair bit of pushback to make these people understand that it's not an oncall issue and that you'll take care of it in the morning. The benefits are very good for this size company, and HR is very good at their job. Work life balance is absolutely a given, lots of swag and employee appreciation, HQ location is nice. Great place to learn your craft if you're early in your career. They attract excellent talent at all levels, and some very hard working individuals. There is definitely a boys' club feel here in upper management, not in a chauvinistic way but in a teachers' pet/favorites way. Middle management is, overall, managers rather than leaders. (Most everyone is really and truly nice, but that doesn't make them a good leader.) Kochava prides themselves on being a bootstrapped company, but uses it as an excuse to pay far less than the going rate. This results in that excellent talent having short tenure. Also, don't expect raises or reviews - if you are interviewing here, definitely give them your actual expected pay rate, because that will be locked in for years, even if promised otherwise during the interview process. 0.0 NEUTRAL 1.0 APPROVE 1.0 3.0 5.0 5.0 3.0 3.0 3.0 1295547 Open More than anything, I have two suggestions: stop playing favorites, and be more realistic in your pay rates. You would likely keep a lot more talent if you were closer to market rate on salary. Kochava does indeed have a good culture (which I believe is largely due to HR's efforts) and some brilliant, hard working individuals all throughout. It has a great small company feel, considering its actual size, and some large company benefits, which is a great mix. This is a 'Can Do" place which is suitable for people who bring their game to the table and help move the company forward. Company still has a start-up feel allowing people to shape some of the direction both on the product and engineering side of things. If you assume being catered to, you'll have a difficult time. It is up to you to make it work. Salaries and benefits are below industry average. This leads to a lot of overstepping boundaries, leaving specific individuals and teams out of decisions when they should be involved, and talking negatively behind others' back.- Bad and unprofessional behavior is written off as passion by leadership. - Some people are considered 'untouchable'. When issues are brought to their attention to management, even when multiple people make statements about the bad behavior of the individuals. Imagine what would happen if you take a two-faced retail executive, and plop him into a low level exec role at a software company. - Lots of double talk from all levels of management. They say they want feedback, but in reality, they want to be told what a good job they do. They do not appreciate nor actually want honest professional feedback. Be warned. - A seemingly interesting tech and coding stack, but as you explore it you realize it is a poorly designed, poorly implemented mess largely kept functioning by a few people pouring every ounce of their free (and work) time into it. - A dude-bro company culture that is made worse by C level management's fascination with war themes and a military-like culture (despite none of them ever being in the military). - Not uncommon to see people in the office drinking beers at inappropriate times of the day. - Low pay, poor benefits Do not believe the company responses to other negative reviews here, all the issues present in the other negative reviews are absolutely still present, some are even worse now than described. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 10.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1295547 Open To truly fix things would require firing most if not all the management in the Engineering organization, which no one will do. There is always some kind of work that needs to be done. You will learn a LOT in a short amount of time and you will learn from a great team that has learned from experience. Working at Kochava for 4+ years I have learned what are best practices and what are bad. You will become a better developer working here. Great group of people who all love working in a smaller town and enjoy working toward a common goal. If you enjoy a big tech environment in a small town that has everything an outdoorsy person could love this is the place for you. Discounted gym membership, works with local ski resort to purchase a ski pass out of paycheck over 10 pay periods, beer on tap, weekly company-wide meetings to know what all teams are working on. Lack of an internal structured pay scale within the company. Management will be more than happy to hire some under you for either more or barely less than what you make and keep you at your current pay. Don't expect raises unless you work 60+ hours a week constantly or have a valid argument to why you deserve a raise. The on-call schedule has gotten much better over the years but you are expected to conform despite any more compensation for doing so. Downtown location is convenient. Engineering leadership is weak, and unlikely to change. Fraternity-style communication permeates every conversation. Dozens of microservices; each built, tested, and deployed differently. No staging environment. None.
