Very good and talented people work here.

Great people, best of the mission of public radio
All public media stations are growing and developing DE&I. It takes time. Time is frustrating, but KQED is aware of the needs for diversity.

It all depends on your department/manager
Dedicated journalists and curious people who work hard to produce informative, fact-based content. Generous compensation and paid leave.
It really all depends on your department and manager. Departments and teams have totally different cultures and are VERY siloed. For example, the membership and development teams are entirely separate and function independently from one another. Cross-departmental communication and collaboration is difficult. Some managers and department leaders are terrific while others leave a lot to be desired and a few are truly terrible.

Provide staff with opportunities to give feedback about managers and senior leaders. Don't make assumptions about staff needs/wants and don't rely on department leaders to speak for staff. Actually ask staff members what is working for them and what could be improved. Offer more flexibility in terms of work hours and schedules. So many of the meetings and the mandatory social events (specifically the "team building" activities initiated by management) are unnecessary and do not actually contribute to a positive work culture.

Great Mission and People
KQED staff always pulls together to serve the public with honest media. There's never a doubt that you work for an organization that cares about its mission.
There is little turn over at the top and that can lead to some slower decision making.

Great Mission
KQED is starting to hire new, smart people that think in terms of innovation.
It's not a sinking ship as people perceive public media to me. There are tons of opportunity for innovation and growth.
Leaders bicker over resources and personal allocation causing internal stress between departments.
Group decision making causes huge delays in implementing nearly everything project.
It's a meetings nightmare organization. Just send an email.
Too many lifers, especially in leadership, that are stuck in the past.

Dysfunctional Working Environment
The company’s mission is great. Would be greater if they followed through on it.
For every overworked content creator there are five unnecessary middle managers. Only work here if you love playing office politics.
Departments are siloed and there is dysfunction and power struggles because of it.

Good public radio job
Dedicated people, cutting edge approach, good relative pay and benefits
Tend not to hire from within for permanent positions, can get funneled into positions you don't enjoy in order to make full time hours.

Not the best professional experience
- Some really great people in the building
- Opportunities to grow if you have the right support
- Feels good to work in public media
- A lot of bureaucracy and red tape around new ideas that may innovate current processes
- Some managers are not willing to help if you are struggling with your workload, but rather reprimand
- Departments are very siloed
