Great office staff, Attorney selection needs work
|
|
*The office staff here are incredibly friendly. They will also make your life easier on island, so get to know their names.
*The island attorneys are very friendly with each other.
*It is a fun office to work in.
* The work is interesting,
|
*Their are some members of the office staff that will steal from attorneys, so you should not leave anything in your office. The management is aware of this problem but does nothing.
* The friendliness of the attorney's can work against you, as it makes it extremely difficult to move cases on island because people tend to grant extensions easily and "forget" about cases that should be litigated.
*New attorney's with little or no legal experience tend to be promoted to Civil/Criminal Chief or Deputy AG really quickly because of the high turnover, so if you are a more experienced attorney it might get frustrating if it is apparent that the chief might not have the necessary level of expertise to be giving direction in an AG's office.
*The office staff has a lot of funerals and other events. You will be expected to "donate" funds to all these events and any other events the AG or Governor deem important-it is not voluntary.
* New Attorney's will go months without getting paid until HR finally processes your paperwork. The AG's office will tell you it will be five weeks. That is inaccurate, there are attorney's that were not paid for 4-6 months, so if you accept this job bring money for at least 6 months.
*The government housing is pretty bad. It is rat, roach and termite infested, and should be condemned. Avoid it and get a stipend. However, be forewarned that the government does not pay the stipend on time so you will end up paying for your rent out of your own pockets for 4-6 before finally getting a reimbursement check from the government.
*The AG's office is dilapidated . There is a rat and roach infestation in the building-in the offices that attorney's are working in. There are holes in the ceiling where the rats have crawled through the ceiling and invade the attorney's offices.
*There is nothing on the island. Internet (data) is capped and is incredibly expensive. Phones are expensive. Food is expensive (15x-20x more than you would pay in the states). Cars are incredibly expensive and the mechanics on island will cheat you (ship a cheap car from the states). People are great but there is nothing to do on the island. There is one theatre that plays limited movies. No malls or name brand stores.

Hire competent Management. There is a reason that the mainland only hires civil chief and deputies with extensive experience. Also do a proper background check on the off-island attorney's that apply to your office, talk to the previous employers so everyone will know what kind of attorney this person was on the mainland, and their experience, so you won't get attorney that are just flat out dishonest about their experience, have horrible work ethics, or are the attorneys that no legal office would hire in the mainland so they come to AS.

Get to have new experience, and would learn a lot from being a tutor. It also feels good to help out a fellow friend when they are in need of help.
|
Actually working as a peer tutor is a challenging thing, the only bad thing about it is that students would and try to force us to edit but we do not edit.

My advice to the management is that she should always keep her head in the game, because sometimes life can hit them hard.

If you have a choice, stay away

The people that you work with are generally nice and willing to help out.

Those same people can screw you over if you're not careful (e.g. make you do all the work, etc)

Everyone works as a team and help each other in any way. Also, I love my job as a strong administrative supporter. Anyone would learn a lot from this office aside from regular Government work but also coincides with FEMA and Petroleum work. A lot will be gained if worked at this office.

Flexible hours and catered to numerous businesses around the island. Projects included areas in the industrial, mechanical, commercial, and residential fields. Worked closely with project managers.
|
Huge responsibility. This was a family operated and run business and sometimes challenging at decisions regarding project deadlines and sometimes steps to acquire these goals.

The coming of age to American Samoa
|
|
It is the public sector you get out what you put in. Great benefits like sick leave and annual leave.
The leadership is fair but needs some improvement. Leaders must work together and find common ground.
|
It is the public sector and everyone is your business. We need to walk the talk. More training for workers to better understand the government operations to raise the level of service for customers and government.
