private:light&motion https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=602298 Sep 10th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Light & Motion Electrical Engineer Salinas, CA Great atmosphere but if you are and engineer life can be tough -For the most part a great atmosphere -Great coworkers, no big egos to worry about -Get to work next to amazing equipment -Disrespectful management When I worked there I literally was part of meetings where management badmouthed the most senior engineer in the room for asking appropriate questions that pertained to him doing his job. This happened every single day. The effect was the senior engineer was treated very poorly by other engineers in his department and had to work in what I would easily classify isolated as abusive conditions. The management always and aggressively wanted answers to their questions without giving the engineering staff any time to conduct research. The honest answer of "I don't know right now" was not acceptable. This lead engineers to give answers and time estimates to satisfy the immediate situation but also generate product deadlines that were never possible to meet. I watched engineers develop rediculous solutions due to poor management communication. One example I was directly part of happened because management refused to make a desition on what wall charger would be interfacing to what battery pack size and an $80 PCB board had to be developed to interface any wall charger to any battery pack (that's $80 a piece at volume mind you). This went to market and so did the cost! All in all, if management isn't giving you a hard time it's a great place to work. Comfortable facility with nice break room and a full kitchen/dinning to store and prepare your meals. Hourly pay rate is really good for comparable entry level positions. Raises and promotions are considered annually. If you are into cycling or diving, this is an ideal job to connect you to the industry, Lack of inter-departmental communication, minimal/incomplete/outdated SOP's, workload is high. A small team that requires most to juggle multiple job positions resulting in postponement of priority tasks. The CEO and CFO (a deranged husband and wife duo) have no idea what they are doing. The CFO is so crazy that she (in front of the whole company) jumped on the table and reprimanded the sales managers for not making their sales goals. Micro management, lack of communication, under qualified supervisors, poor business practices and decisions fueled by huge egos. They play favorites. They under pay you, expect way too much out of you, and under appreciate you. They only communicate to you to tell you you are doing a bad job, even if not true. They play the blame game. One time I got invited to a meeting only to be yelled at by the CEO in front of my co workers for something that I didn't do. They do not recognize you for going above and beyond, they only expect it. They listen to poorly selected, under qualified supervisors who like to stab you in the back if they don't like you. Benefits are not that great. Production team is grossly under paid and micro managed. Extremely poor financial management (always broke with no money to improve, wastes money on superfluous things). Toxic work environment. Unsafe conditions at the work place, no regard for safety. Reactive, not proactive management. Shady business practices like not paying vendors, or ignoring customers. They tried to take away vacation time from me when I resigned. DO NOT WORK HERE! The CEO is not a nice person at all, at any time. His ego is the main reason this place is going down hill. His way or the highway. They skirt the law, like using dangerous chemicals in the warehouse that gave 20+ employees sever headaches and fevers. They instill fear. Anyone is replaceable. High turn over rate. They do not listen to employee's ideas (unless you are a favorite). They rush all the time to bring product to market, only to have to recall products and waste a ton of money fixing the problems instead of getting it right the first time. Many failed projects due to this practice. There is no quality assurance or testing before products go live. They only care about selling the product as soon as possible because if they don't they will be broke again. "I don't care if we haven't tested it yet, let's just build it, ship it, and fix the problems later." -direct quote from Daniel, the CEO. I have faced many challenges that I had to figure out on my own. Some people see this as a negative, however, I have gained a ton confidence in by abilities because of these challenges. This company is not for someone that wants a promotion for doing their job - they must go beyond their "job description". There is a strong sense of "team" and the environment is very casual. The "C" level has tried to create a fun, inclusive environment, but that cannot be mistaken for a casual work pace. Each employee is expected to handle multiple roles and be self-motivated. The positive is no-one is ever bored. The previous reviews are right, in that the CEO will push each employee. He has said that what we did last year is no longer good enough. However, I believe he does in order for the company to thrive and grow. The biggest challenge L&M faces is that we manufacture in the US (but that is also what makes the company great). L&M is competing against China made knock-offs but with a higher operational cost.
