Good Pay, Lacking in Everything Else
|
Los Alamitos looks like a great place to work for an outsider. But when you actually do get there it’s evident how diversity is lacking in all areas, including the Board of Education and top management. People here have no problem commenting on their love and support for Trump. It is a strong Republican/Conservative workplace. There is a lot of favoritism. There are a lot of people who you just cannot fully trust. Management expects you to work hard and long hours without any form of compensation. Overall, not worth it.

Rewarding and fun place to work
|
I loved the department that I worked in. The people I worked with were great and my boss was so easy to get along with. The job duties were challenging but not difficult. The individual school staffs were also wonderful to work with.

Teaching is rewarding, but coworkers can be sharks, and substitutes are underappreciated.
|
The difficulty is not with the students, but rather the extremely competitive professional environment. Teachers compete against one another and see substitutes as 'threats.' They can seem friendly, but give a substitute a poor review, later, without any warning, explanation, or coaching from a supervisor.

While I was a substitute teacher there, I was a long-term teacher covering for a teacher on maternity leave from January - June. The day I sat with the teacher was the day she left on maternity leave. She was the last teacher that sat with to show me how things work. I worked completely and utterly alone. Not one teacher EVER reached out to see if I needed any help with being the new teacher at a new school. The only person that helped me with ANYTHING was the custodian. He was wonderful and I couldn't have known where the staff restroom was if not for him.

Poor Upper Management
|
Upper management is very detached from what is happening throughout the District. They are overspending their budgets and taking out loans for cosmetic upgrades while cutting employees hours and positions. They do not have a grasp on how to manage staff and it is evident through the apparent staff low morale. they expect you to work past your scheduled time without overtime and will make you feel guilty for inquiring about overtime. On a personal level they are quite invasive and judgemental when inquiring about your personal life. I am very thankful my time here was only on a temporary assignment because it is one of the most mismanaged and unpleasant places to work for. I would not recommend anyone to work here if you value your work-life balance and have any sort of integrity.

Great district and job security
|
Smaller district, but great community feel. They care about the students and it was very rewarding working there. Fast pace, and no days are ever the same, but in a good way. Great coworkers, management, etc. I was sad that I had to leave there. Had to leave due to relocation to another state to be closer to family.

Although there are wonderful benefits and flex scheduling, there are limited opportunities for advancement in the HR field. I learned a lot about workers compensation and continued to grow in benefits. the hardest part of the job is trying to teach employees their benefits, when they really don't understand basics. The most enjoyable part of the job was being accepted as a part of the LosAl Family.
