Change is hard, but we thrive
|
|
Lumiata started its renaissance in April 2018, when Dilawar joined as new CEO. One of the first changes was to rebuild the management team, this is how I joined. Since I joined in Oct 2019, we've gone through non-trivial, fundamental, make or break it changes:
* Defined new company values
* Moved from a datacenter operation to the cloud
* Rebuilt the entire tech-stack, and product strategy
* Rebuilt engineering team (still in process)
* Made difficult staff changes
* Re-invented our Agile process a couple of times
* Built our cloud infra a couple of times, in AWS and then again in GCP, using K8s and Istio
* Brought in new engineering leadership
* Implemented OKR process
* Delivered initial iterations of our platform and new ML models/apps
* Streamlines our ML practices, and tried new ML paradigms
* Passed our first HIPAA and SOC2 audits in the cloud
This is just the list that comes to mind off the bat, there is much more. We went from 0 to 1 in less than a year. Being able to accomplish as much as we have, in a little amount of time, with a small team, is a huge Pro to me. New people have come, old people have gone, but the people here now are committed, energized and again, moving very fast.
We have pivoted, we have gone through a lot of turbulence in the process, but we're coming stable and sound post turbulence. Now we're hyper-focused on executing the new technology and product strategies, with a ton of customer validation to ensure it's the right set of strategies.

When you're executing in a hyper-build mode, it's a hard mode to be in. It is not for the faint of heart. When you're moving at the pace that we are, it's not comfortable. Some of us thrive in this environment, however, and quite frankly it is why we're here! The intensity of the current environment can be equally hard, and rewarding. While hard and demanding, it's making us all grow, professionally and as people.
We believe that there is no worse decision than the one that is not being made, which means we make decisions fast. The side effect is that, as humans, not all decisions are spot on every single time. We need to quickly take corrective action and stir the wheel when this happens, this may be very hard for some. I would not call it a con per se, but it's a reality we live it, not for everyone.

The right opportunity at the right time!

There is much less bureaucracy and hierarchy than at Fortune 500 employers so decisions get made quickly. It’s great to get up each day and work with a team dedicated to improving healthcare. This is largely a result of the new leadership namely the new CEO who has been here for just over a year.

With it being a start-up, there are some processes in development but it means I get to influence and create our future. Being able to execute when things are in flux is a plus.

A stronger new direction
|

New CEO in place for a year has really turned the place around. I've been around here for a long time and it finally feels like a real solid company. There are some pretty big technical and business challenges, but I'm pretty sure we can get them solved. The biggest plus is that if we hit our marks, we can really change an industry that literally touches everyone's life. It's good to come to work on something that's not selling ads, and instead try to make healthcare less expensive and more effective. It's also nice to come to work with people who aren't fully of hype, but who know what they're doing in the sector.

Healthcare is hard. The industry moves very slowly so sales can take forever. It's harder to get continuous feedback than working on an app or something that's more consumer facing. On the other hand that means there's opportunity to be had.

The Machine Learning challenges that healthcare data presents are a constant source for innovation within the team. Having extremely talented team members means that those challenges are met with novel, thought out, and interesting ideas (often inspired by publicly available bleeding edge research in the field, and then evangelized internally), and frequent successes.
Dilawar's leadership and vision have been an inspiration, and led to overall high morale, and it was a real joy seeing how he operates. The company is motivated and focused, with a communal sense of purpose.
