Mad Advertising - Pros and cons
|
|
If you want to be able to work anywhere - work at Mad first. Once you work there, the world becomes your oyster. They teach you to be pro-active, focused, solution and goal driven without needing the step by step guidance by a manager. The team is transparent and honest and they thrive on open communication and team work.
|
If you are not a pro-active person, you better learn fast as nothing is given to you on a platter. You need to work hard without specific day to day guidance in order to make it at Mad

Political, unsavoury work colleagues with even worse clients + an attitude of defeat compounded by fat-cat management.
|
|
If you can handle the personalities, the clients and the rigours of this company - you can handle anything.
Their clients have one of the largest marketing spends in the country so scope for new work is great.
The encouragement of creativity is commendable even though brilliant ideas developed through strategic insight are often quashed by knee-jerk epiphanies by management. There are very very talented individuals at this company who are dedicated to their craft but who are also visibly miserable due to mismanagement + culture of blame and politics at the company.

Work-life balance? This phrase does not exist. This company expects you to work till whenever the job is done. Last minute projects are expected to take priority over any family, personal or spousal commitment.
Overtime and long hours are not rewarded, noticed or noted. However, you dare take a lunch longer 20 minutes - and it is frowned upon.
The company will never back you up over a client. The company's main clients are hard-core retail giants in Africa and their culture of supplier-abuse has seeped into the company on all levels.
You get a sense of stagnation as an employee. You also sense the defeat in senior professionals after they are told to just "do what was done last year".
Having moved on to another agency, I can testify that Madworld's workflow processes are a mess due to the fact that the advertising company is a subsidiary of a group that has a pie in almost everything - restaurants, events, stage building, tv shows, song recording, property and even a "digital marketing" agency it so seems. Management has no idea how to foster innovative thinking or implement systems that will improve the lives and efficiency of their staff. Even when courageous efforts are made to drive change and progress in terms of systems - the ideas are shut down, put-off and what you get a sense of defeat. Not out of will, but because people who work here no longer care. You do not want to surrounded by this mentality everyday.
The team structures are extremely top heavy with no operations manager.
They do not invest in talent or human resources and little care is given with regards to abiding the law ie. If you are sick for 1 day, you are still required to produce a sick note or you don't get paid or have a leave day subtracted. Referendums that affect your work and position are passed without staff participation or discussion- ie. becoming a year-round trading company and therefore all staff members who have worked for less than 12 months do not qualify for leave (over christmas and holidays - most agencies close shop due to client's not being available).
The general staff compliment is also poorly selected - positions are filled with inappropriate people, with many empty positions unfilled because of staff who have chosen to end their time at Mad.
When the company asked staff to introduce their friends to the company - not many dared.

Change.
Or this will not be the first and only honest review of the company.
It is a pity, because the company, and its founder have inspirational values and energy - the very reasons that many talented professionals have and had joined.
It is a pity that the rest of the company does not understand the ethos, nor share the passion for excellence.
