A good place to work

MTC produces great plays by award-winning playwrights.

MTC lacks diversity in its staff and plays.

Amazing Experience

An amazing hands-on experience. Great networking opportunities.

Wished for a little more compensation. If salary cannot be increased, maybe including a metrocard?

Good place to start, and then move on.
Great company with a rich history. Some truly outstanding shows, and a willingness to (sometimes) take chances with their productions, especially off-Broadway. A true force in the NYC theatre scene, and a great place to kick-start your career. Many staff members are former interns, so there is SOME room for advancement. Most of the staff are good, kind, hard-working people. The work can be hard, but they make time for fun as well. Tons of opportunities for free theatre tickets, opening night parties, events, etc. The networking possibilities are many, and this will be a great notch on your resume. I debated giving 3 stars overall, but decided on 4 since the pros did outweigh the cons.
The pay disparity is similar to that of a third world country. You have a few people in leadership and department head positions who are raking in 6 figures (more than half a million per year for the top brass), and that doesn't include some other major perks (I recall one particular department head who had a car service to drive her 4 blocks from the office to the theatre). The rest of the staff are struggling to pay rent, making from the low 30s to 40s to maybe 50s, with a few making a bit more. In today's economic climate, this is a really "bad look" for a non-profit performing arts organization (this isn't Amazon, but the structure seems similar). Some of the staff are also suffering at the hands of department heads who can be downright abusive...maybe not physically, but definitely verbally and emotionally (the same head who got the car service once very loudly and with a lot of expletives berated an intern because they couldn't find honey mustard for her sandwich, and she refused their sincere attempt at mixing honey and mustard for her...true story). Most departments worked well together, and people seemed generally engaged and happy. But there were definitely those where everyone seemed constantly stressed and in fear, because of the tyrant in charge. And perhaps most distressing of all, it was all tolerated...sort of a "that's just (insert name) being (insert name)" attitude. Finally, the lack of diversity is glaring...mostly in terms of race, but also in terms of economic backgrounds (you can't afford to work for pennies if Daddy isn't helping pay the bills).

On the cons: Spread the wealth. Would it kill the leadership to downsize their summer homes a bit and take the subway, so the rest of the staff can afford to eat? Discipline anyone (department head, staff, or intern) who displays abusive behavior. Really look at your lack of diversity, and do something about it. On the pros: keep up the great artistic work, keep working to help advance the careers of your staff and interns, and use your great standing in NYC to make the theatre world a very welcoming place that's fun to be a part of. Despite the cons I have listed, I do think MTC is overall a great organization.

Interesting History, Problematic Working Environment
It was good experience to work at a Broadway theater. I got better at my job and learned a lot while I was there.
There is deep favoritism among certain employees that has nothing to do with job performance--the organization is horrifically cliquey, and only values artistic employees. It is also one of the most notoriously racist cultural organizations in NYC--work from BIPOC artists is tokenized (if programmed at all), and they almost exclusively hire and promote white employees. The salaries for working staff are criminally low while the Artistic and Executive Directors rake in more than half a million dollars each year (see 990s), and completely misappropriate funds (including by using company dollars for their own personal needs). The HR practices are deeply out-dated and suppress and neglect simple employee needs. The senior staff are entirely white, many are condescending and aggressive towards lower and middle management, and they have all been there for decades so there is no room for advancement, and they will neither review their own antiquated practices, or invite in new opinions from younger staff-members.

Artistic and Executive Directors need to retire and be replaced by new visionary BIPOC leaders, and the entire organization should be completing thorough anti-racism training multiple times a year. The organization needs to completely overhaul its salary matrix and HR practices. Favoritism of Artistic positions needs to be abandoned. Exclusionary clique culture inside the organization need to be addressed--it is bad for the morale of other employees.

Incredible experience, great coworkers, too little pay
Internship program is an amazing experience and a chance to work with incredible coworkers. I thoroughly enjoyed the work I was doing.
The low pay (and not just for interns) is the only downside.

Good artistic programming. Good education department.
Working in my specific department was not a great experience. The work was not very engaging. Since interns are constantly coming in and out the door, it seems that this builds a wall between staff/interns—a lot of times you are made to feel like you are just a number, or a box being checked.
Not enough diversity in the workplace.
Senior staff needs to retire—the place desperately needs relevant leaders.

Fantastic training ground for future jobs, and a great team!
You're working on some of the best Broadway shows of any given season, and get a full view into the way Broadway runs, inside and out. The team is full of great people, and there are huge amounts of opportunity to learn.
Some of the company's structures can be a bit outdated. Pay could be higher.
