It has been exciting to see the advancement in technology and the growth that MTEQ has achieved in 3 years. The staff is great, and management is supportive. Co-workers are diverse and skilled. Most view us as a team working together. Management sends the message that we own our respective jobs. I personally feel this sends a positive message. Due to the growth some staff works in temporary spaces. private:manufacturingtechniquesinc.mteq-2 https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=498043 Sep 17th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open MTEQ Headquarters United States USA Extremely poor work/life balance and no respect for employees There are some brilliant experts here that were a pleasure to work with, and some exciting technical missions I've waited some time to share thoughts on my time at MTEQ, but the suspicious and uncharacteristic sequence of entirely 5-star reviews in a short timespan have convinced me to do so now. Please look at the history of reviews at this company beyond the last few months and you'll see a consistent pattern of frustrated, burnt out, and angry employees across years... and then, abruptly, 13 straight nearly-perfect reviews. Frankly, this was the worst working experience of my career and I don't think it's fair to prospective workers to hide this information. Work/life balance is nonexistent and compensation doesn't begin to make up for it. My position was paid below industry average and would not increase to meet it, despite being significantly overworked throughout my entire tenure because my team lacked resources. If you work directly with leadership as my role did, you will be expected to answer calls and emails 24/7. You are on their schedule, not your own, and you should prepare yourself for some difficult, unpredictable, and antagonistic meetings with upper management multiple times per week. If you do not answer demands adequately, you may be chastised in front of your peers (or boss, or even subordinates) regardless of the circumstances or best practices involved in your trade. Working and responding before or after hours was the expectation, not an unusual occurrence, and as such it was not recognized or rewarded. Those consistently negative and condescending interactions, along with being unable to escape my work on nights, weekends, and even on vacations, took a significant mental and physical toll on me. There is simply no understanding of or compassion for employees' personal lives or obligations outside of MTEQ. I never felt comfortable going to HR over any of these issues because it was clear that HR was powerless and not respected enough to affect change at the upper levels. This was a consistent theme I saw with other department heads, especially outside of the engineering groups. People I spoke with often did not feel valued or respected, which reinforced my decision to leave. And finally, the HQ's location in Lorton, VA is awful. The surrounding area offers very little outside of fast food, construction, and truck traffic, and the facilities themselves are old and seated in a bare industrial park with no additional amenities or benefits like cafes, gyms, or outdoor places to walk or even sit and eat outside. The experience of working in this location is extremely poor when compared to any of the companies headquartered further north, so consider how important that is to you if you are used to working in DC, Alexandria, Arlington, Reston, or other nicer areas. There are some great people and brilliant experts working at MTEQ that I truly miss working with, and the technical missions can be fascinating, but there are just too many deeply ingrained management and cultural issues that produced all the issues described above. I would not recommend this workplace to colleagues or friends. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL -1.0 DISAPPROVE 5.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 498043 Open 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "MTEQ", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 2334143, "responseDateTime": "2019-09-20T13:29:42.673", "translationMethod": null, "response": "Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear this. As far as location, yes, we are in headquartered in Lorton which has less congestion and fewer restaurants, etc. than locations north of us. This location was strategically selected to make us easily accessible to our customers at Ft. Belvoir and reduce commute time for many of our employees who live north of the location and go away from traffic to get to work. As for work/life balance, our intention is never to diminish this. We started as a family owned company and understand that family should come before work. We wish this would have been reported to HR so we could have had a chance to step in and rectify the situation perhaps through an adjustment in duties and responsibilities. It is no secret that we are growing at a tremendous pace and everyone here is very busy. As for pay, we use multiple salary assessment tools which allow us to pay at or well above industry average. We would like to know what tool contradicts this. If reported to HR, we would have been happy to assess. As for the influx of positive reviews, we would like to think this is due to our increasing attempt to bolster company pride. We are always open to feedback and can be reached at hr@mteq.com. The nature of the work is exceptionally challenging. Those used to being the "smartest person in the room" and/or the "top performer" must "check themselves", as it can be humbling when you realize you are among equals. We work in interdisciplinary teams (EE, ME, SW Engr, System Engr., Physicists, Mathematicians, etc.) where there is a lot of technical collaboration to achieve project/program goals/milestones. The work is exceptionally rewarding for those who love the challenges of research & development (R&D), prototyping and LRIP (Limited Rate Initial Production) efforts, where you are given the opportunity to architect/implement solutions as well as problem solve! It can be frustrating for folks who are used to being the "smartest person in the room" and/or the "top performer" at other organizations, as other organizations can and do have lower standards and review of work performance/product. It can be a rude awakening for folks coming from such organizations that there is a real expectation to perform and not "rest on your laurels" of a previous successes. As MTEQ is a small company, your work product routinely gets visibility and constructive scrutiny, so lack of performance or a sub-standard work product will be quickly recognized. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 498043 Open 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "MTEQ", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 2314172, "responseDateTime": "2019-09-06T09:47:58.14", "translationMethod": null, "response": "We love this post!
