Lack of direction & strategic focus

Ability to work from home. Fun, friendly environment with good people. Low stress environment overall.

Misguided leadership led to poor business decisions and ultimately layoffs and reorganization. Lack of faith & investment in people over process and procedures.

Work with really great, smart people
Work from home
The people who work here are fun. Smart. Go-getters.
You'll get to work with and meet some really brilliant people along the way. Their annual event is awesome. High energy, exciting, and worth the hard work and long days.
|
Disorganized leadership
Lack of direction
Not family friendly
Lousy pay, no bonuses, no raises
No room for growth
Insufficient organization/support when it comes to technology (and you must provide your own computer)
No real onboarding process. Starting here is overwhelming.
Stubborn and disconnected leadership can make for a frustrating, demeaning, and sometimes hostile work environment.
No cross-training. Lots of gaps in knowledge. Lots of questions about who owns what get in the way of getting things done efficiently.
Leadership picks favorites ... leading to disproportionate workloads for some, while others skate by with less work, fewer rules and consequences, and less supervisor involvement.

Fast Paced, Expected to actually work 40 hours
|
|
They take the week off around Christmas.
Work from home.
They say you get half day Fridays before holidays, however, if you start early, you really aren't getting a half day at all. They close at 1:00 on Fridays before a holiday.
Your hours can be flexible, but depending on management, there are stricter rules with some over others.
|
You have to purchase your own computer equipment. There is no IT department to help with computer issues.
For being a work from home job, you are expected to be working more then if you went into an office.
No benefits offered besides working from home.
The vacation benefits are minimal.
Con of the week around Christmas is that everyone crams in the same amount of work, but you take that week of paid.

This is a good company to work for. Good culture, good work/life balance and fun co-workers and all remote workplace.
|
|
Virtual company, so everyone works from home. Good work/life balance. Great co-workers. The company has grown steadily (if slowly) and keeps entire staff up-to-date on company's performance.
|
Not a lot of room for advancement as it is a small company. Not many salary increases. Sometimes the strategic vision and planning for the company seems a little haphazard.

A business constantly reinventing itself
|
|
MProf produces excellent content, which creates an opportunity to connect with some of the greatest minds in the marketing world. Also, it's a "virtual" company, so most of the 30 +/- team members work from home, with occasional team gatherings in California and other locations. Since it's been around since 2000, it's fairly well known among U.S. marketing professionals.
|
There are some fun, smart and creative team members at MProfs. However, too many control freaks have been assigned to leadership positions. They forget the big-picture priorities and tend to demotivate those they supervise.

A true grass roots organization that delivers an amazing workplace & the best content on all things marketing.
|
|
Virtual organization - flexible schedules.
Hard working individuals with passion for what they do.
Very nimble with moving quickly. Not a large organization so things aren't caught up in a funnel of approvals. Each business unit head can make decisions to move quickly.
|
If you are looking for a social office atmosphere, this isn't for you.

Great business that's outgrown its leadership
|
|
MarketingProfs produces valuable marketing know-how for 350,000 loyal members and fans. It's a source of pride to be associated with such a strong brand. If you are in a role at MP where you get direct feedback from customers about the content you produce, boo-yah!
It's a unique environment because as a virtual company, employees are dispersed across the country, working from home offices. Once you abandon the traditional 9-5 job with a daily commute, you'll have a hard time going back. :)
|
The flip side of being in a virtual company is that colleagues rarely see each other. After the company exceeded about 20 people, the expense/trouble of getting EVERYONE together seemed to outweigh the perceived benefits. Relationships among many peers have suffered as a result.
Although there are incredibly smart, talented, fun and committed people that have been in the organization from the early days, many of the more recently hired staffers lack the skills, creativity and flexibility that have been integral to MarketingProfs' success and culture.

Find someone who knows how to take a company at this stage to the next level of growth and hand them the reins. Stop spending resources on developing products that you assume customers want -- ASK them first. Pay heed to your team members who interact with customers on a regular basis. In short: Get out of the way and watch what can happen!
