I was an extern at VCA. The entire staff was very welcoming. They walking me through every aspect of the job step by step. This is a unicorn vet hospital! Everyone helped me thrive and make the entire externship experience amazing. I loved working there and highly recommend working for VCA! What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Blood draws were stressful, however, I was an extern. For this reason, I did not have enough experience to do blood draws consistently. The staff walked me through every step, though. They were extremely supportive making the entire experience less stressful What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Supportive and understanding. Everyone looks for success in the rest of the staff. No one is alone in what they do. This is the best veterinary hospital I have been at! What is a typical day like for you at the company? My complaints are: 1. Some people are favorited and therefore not criticized or found to be in the wrong (even if they are) because they are a “favorite” 2. Management is terrible. I once asked why my schedule had been abruptly changed without any notice to me and my manager ignored my texts for several months. I have also heard from other coworkers that the manager doesn’t get back to their emails or texts even if she has read them. 3. There are several people working there who have stacks of complaints towards them but are not fired or reprimanded because they are a minority, disabled, or have been working there for more than 2 years 4. The pay is unfair. They have many employees working 3-4 departments everyday with no increase in pay or acknowledgment of their hard work. 5. Many employees openly talk about politics, religions and other such sensitive topics without any care for the people they are disrespecting or those who many disagree with them. These reasons make the environment toxic and going to work each day very hard. I feel that every employee in there is stressed and not adequately paid for their work and it’s causing tension between coworkers and management. There are very positive things to VCA too but the bad outweighs the good in my opinion. Comparable to other large companies, such as a grocery store, there are great ones and bad ones. Managers are constantly pushing numbers; but I don’t allow that to negatively affect my quality of care. My immediate managerial support staff are borderline stupid. It is worth it to work here (for benefits, pay, and job security reasons). If you have the strength to hear nothing but negativity from upper management, you can simply say “yes, I have areas to work on.” Then they leave, and I can continue being a quality doctor. I was fortunate to work with a great team, and developed close friendships with other departments, as well. However, management (including the medical department), left something to be desired. There was a revolving door of CSR and kennel employees, due to the constant verbal abuse from clients.
