There are very supportive people you will work with. They are very down to earth and will help you in a time of need. You can have health care.
|
-The product is too expensive and is constantly said to be expensive by most customers.
-I was told people make $18-20 an hour with commission when I met with the CEO before employment. This is not true and a large majority of the people get their offered flat hourly because the tier based commission does not work in your favor
-You will constantly be moved from store to store loosing your be back customers and networking of sales. This will directly effect your sales because each store has a different based tier system for commission. You might get fired for this.
-There is a lot of sale stealing from particular stores. each store has someone who robs sales. This is exactly like them stealing money from your pocket. It is usually the morning shift that does this due to working alone with no surveillance.
-You will not become a store manager unless you are like 40 years or older. So do not expect to be a store manager at any time if you are under the age of 40.
-You are often placed in very expensive areas like Waikiki and you have to buy VERY expensive tourist based food with no food allowance if you do not bring food to work every day.
-There is no designated parking for you so employees are required to pay $150-200 a month to park at a hotel or nearing parking lot.
-You will have no real personal relationship with the owner of the company. You rarely see him and there is no way to make a connection with him. I had no idea who I was working for the whole time.
-You are not able to afford co-payments for hospital visits if you are sick due to not having money.
-There is no paid time off for the whole first year of employment.
-You have to work and go home then repeat because you will not have money.

Dated equipment, some unsafe tools. Incapable department managers . A company that is dedicated to Koa wood but has very little koa wood to work with. Difficult to achieve work goals with unrealistic expectations from management and insufficient materials. The owners micromanage operations, but have very little knowledge of woodworking. Favoritism. No loyalty to veteran employees.

Sell the company to someone that can run a woodworking business! Invest in better tools and fair employee compensation. Stop importing cheap products from China and passing them off as "Made in Hawaii". Bring back the true "Gracious Hawaiian Living" that made the company great.

Owners are horrible. They treat employees like objects that they think are desperate to be at the company. Use them, abuse them, and then dispose of them. Martin & MacArthur was once a company that embraced the Aloha Spirit, and although it may seem that way from the outside looking in, this is no longer true. Who you meet during the interview process is not truly who they are. The main problem lies with the behavior and expectations of the owners— especially with Mr. Tam. They are very money hungry and break all kinds of labor laws, which one will definitely encounter during the holiday season and inventory if they are in management. If you think you can change the course of the company by “moving mountains” with your hard work, you are in for a big disappointment.. that “mountain” will stay put, because unless ownership changes their ways (or a new owner comes into the picture) your efforts are best spent elsewhere. The company has a high turnover rate, mostly because of employee dissatisfaction, lack of development, mistreatment, and lower than average pay. There is definite favoritism in the company, which is especially seen in management. Some move up in the company not because of qualifications or performance, but rather due to of a lack of applicants since their reputation seems to be catching up to them. This especially seen in upper management.

The only real benefit is that full-timers qualify for medical via HMSA, a widely accepted, comprehensive insurance provider. Because of high turnover the chances of you getting hired despite a flimsy work record are pretty good.
|
Lack of respect for employees; rash, emotionally charged decisions often made by an owner who lacks empathy and sensibility; the high turnover because of the poor working conditions forces employees to work horrible schedules; poor management; unqualified HR; misleading advertising practices - i.e. not everything is made in Hawaii as many of their ads promote; their “craftsmen” sometimes include producers in China and Canada; no sick leave, just PTO after 1 year; only 2 paid holidays per year.
