A good place to get your hours
|
|
Masada Homes provides services to diverse and disadvantaged children and families in Los Angeles County. If you work at Masada Homes (or any other Community Mental Health Agency), you'll earn experience with some of the toughest cases you'll see anywhere (short of inpatient). You'll have an opportunity to work on some comparatively "easy" cases, but you'll also work with children in Foster Care (think abuse, trauma), high risk (think suicidality), and with parents of the many cultures of Los Angeles County. You'll be well prepared, clinically, to work where ever you'd like to work.
If you read through the reviews of Masada Homes, you'll see a break following 2017. This is when Masada Homes passed from prior management to current management. The prior management had a social work point of view... and while there were negatives (outdated equipment, clunky software, terrible wi-fi, outdated facilities) there was a very positive and humanistic feel to the place. Think "humans helping humans."
Read the reviews of Masada Homes 2018 and later, and you'll see how the workplace changed. The authoritarian nature of the leadership, previously wrapped in a velvet glove of compassion, was replaced by a desire to drive the numbers by flogging the staff rather than addressing morale, tools, workflows & processes, documentation requirements, etc. Immediately prior to my departure, some efforts were being made to address morale, and I hope that these efforts remain in place.
Despite the "regime change", if you're willing to work evenings and weekends (not necessarily to meet clients, but to complete your paperwork), then Masada Homes still has a lot to offer. The supervisors are knowledgeable and very deep in experience, and there is plenty of supervision. Every week, you have 1 hour of individual supervision, 2 hours of group supervision, and every month, you get an hour of supervision for each "evidence based practice" in which you have been trained. The training in Evidence Based Practices is paid for by Masada. Masada also provides some paid time off for you to pursue your own educational/training interests (at your own expense). No matter how tough your caseload, you can get all the clinical feedback you'll need to become an excellent clinician.
You'll accumulate clinical hours towards your license requirements like clockwork. Supervisors are uniformly supportive of BBS licensing requirements and will sign for all the work you've completed in a timely way (not necessarily instantly - they have plenty of work to do as well).
Last thing on the pros: the benefits package is outstanding, and worth thousands and thousands of dollars to you each year.
|
There are cons, and there are cons, right? The outdated equipment, clunky software, terrible wi-fi, and outdated facilities remain, but they're not deal breakers. There are more than enough "pros" to make up for them. So what are the real "cons?"
The first real "con" applies to Masada Homes and most other Community Mental Health organizations - once you get your license, the only career option for you is to become a supervisor (there are positions available in Quality Assurance but ick...). If supervising Associates is your idea of a good time, this may not be a "con" for you, but it is still limiting.
The biggest con is the drop in support for staff. In the earlier days, when I had a child who appeared to be at significant risk of suicide, I called my supervisor. She asked me a few questions and drove out to the site to support me. She stayed with the family and I as law enforcement was contacted, and helped me work with the family as they transported the client to a psychiatric hospital (he was placed on a 72 hour hold).
In my later days, when I called my supervisor requesting support for a suicidal client, I got voicemail. When she didn't return the call, I called her supervisor - the department head. Again, I got voicemail. She returned the call much later, explaining that she had been in church.
I am so grateful for my original supervisor and her support (she has long since departed Masada)... that is, of course, another story.
Many people gripe about Evidence Based Practices, and the pressure to provide short term treatment. These may be cons - but they are part of working at a Community Mental Health Agency, and no different at Masada Homes than any other agency of its type.
The final con I'll mention is the weakness in management, from the Board of Directors on down. The business model hasn't changed in decades, and while the environment has changed substantially, the source of funds (the County of Los Angeles) has not. This allows Masada Homes to continue to function on autopilot, at least for the time being.
BOTTOM LINE
If you'd like to work for a Community Mental Health Agency, you could do a lot worse than Masada Homes. But, you could do better, too. Either way, you can get the training and hours you need to launch your career as a therapist.

Get the training and move on
|
|
They dont care about productivity but as result, its impossible to get a raise because they arent making as much money as most agencies. You have flexibility. I have always had an understanding supervisor. No dress codes, casual, relaxed environment. Depending on what site you work at you will see the different politics but Lynwood site is the most casual. You will get a LOT of free training, CEUS, preparation for BBS tests
|
-No raises
-Pay periods are 18 days in between
-Out dated sites
-benefits increase per year
-Not enough desks so its first come first serve
-air conditioning doesnt work often
-Not much room for growth
-Documentation is too detailed and tedius

Very few raises, upper management disconnected from actual work, lack of timely responses from upper management to requests; depressing physical environment.

low stress level, you feel supported by the staff and you are not micro managed. There is also a great balance between your personal and professional life.
|
the facilities are dated, could look a lot nicer considering they are providing services to the community and when the families come into the office, you feel as if you have walked into a time warp zone from the 80ties.
