MassChallenge works employees hard, without necessarily offering competitive pay or benefits. It can do this because it has an altruistic "positive impact" mission which attracts people who are willing to do more than their fair share to do good in the world. This would all be fine if MassChallenge didn't also get in it's own way and impeed its own mission. During my first year, the only member of the accounting department was a fellow intern. Unsurprisingly, expenses went wild (some team members racked up tens of thousands in Uber bills alone in a month). The financial difficulty led to a massive round of economically motivated layoffs which sapped moral. Despite all the negatives, the culture is inclusive, and the team was very welcoming. I personally grew a lot from my experience there. MassChallenge is a company that still acts like a startup despite being more than a decade old. They just have too many irons in the fire and can't properly manage the load. There is constant turnover and the team is not invested in.
