One of the best managers and most inspiring people I've met so far wasn't even mine. This person made it their personal mission to remain available professionally and personally for anyone no matter the position. They were always willing to help out and mentor no matter which team you were on or what the task was. I think that leadership needs to pay more attention to the people who might not be the most outgoing or the most visible in every room but the ones who silently (without credit seeking) work the hardest in not only their jobs but to elevate everyone around them because they genuinely care. Hopefully management will take heed and do more to keep these people - there are always people who can do the job but, the people who go above and beyond just because are special and make any environment better. I’ve never felt as loved, respected and appreciated at a company more than here. Work hours are NORMAL and when you take time off, it’s expected to not to be “available”. They play favorites with employees - No room for growth. - Discrimination on pay based on role (some teams get bonuses and regular pay bumps aka the dev team, finance, etc, while other teams aka marketing, creative literally have to beg for raises) - See my advice to management below -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1397929 Open Tear apart this place and do the work to put it back together, the way it's going now will leave Mayvenn as a non-factor in a few short years. The culture is TOXIC. There are dept heads that steal the credit from their teams in order to not make themselves look good and not "get fired." One of the managers told his team from his mouth that he would take credit for their work (he said it in jest, but he did it regularly) and would also regularly mention doing shady practices in order to not get fired. There is no upward growth, no HR department, and no way to get mentorship. There is no standard system of feedback, reviews, or performance checks. Which I get it, it's a startup so these things usually are the last to appear as startups scale. But, the company at this point has at least 50-75 employees? It's time to start growing up. Many misogynistic, racist, and downright toxic things have occurred without any sort of proper reprimands. On top of that, people have been let go for questioning things about the company status quo. People are being held back from career growth and don't feel secure in their roles for fear of being fired or laid off. Your favoritism is showing. Everyone knows who the favorite employees are (it's a small company so it's very clear) but those employees aren't necessarily the ones with the most informed insight. The CEO and COO seem to only care about being comfortable in their interactions which means they keep a very limited face with people other than their selected few favorites. There are people who work here who live and breath the product but aren't the ones who get to influence the company decisions. Most of the black people that work here are on the customer service team (with a few sprinkled in marketing and creative), and the CS team is the only one with a black female department head. All the other teams have white or Asian, mainly male, department heads. How does that add up at a Black women's hair company based in Oakland, CA? There is no soul here, and it's sad. It had a lot of potential, but because the collective management team not only doesn't know much about the product but also DGAF about their black customers, let alone black women's hair, Mayvenn is becoming more and more irrelevant. There is no direction. Also, stop making ignorant and racist statements about YOUR black customers. The people that are buying YOUR product and keeping YOU afloat.
