The Generosity and Humanity of Bryan Jesse and Mark McGarrah

I spent about 6 years at McJ and it was one of the most meaningful chapters in my storied career. It was the kind of agency that not only made me better at advertising, but I believe a better person as well. The human rights record of this company was outstanding. They sincerely cared about the people that worked there as well as our families. Bryan and Mark knew our spouses, partners, kids, and welcomed them into the agency, and sometimes their homes. As an independent company, they were free to make decisions and create policies that benefited us and not a holding company. In good times, the founders selflessly shared out significant profits they could have easily hoarded for themselves. They were also very early champions of DEI– way before it became a face-saving focus for the industry. They were strong and active supporters of E4 youth, not just financially, but with all kinds of other support such as providing guidance, meeting space, publicity and of course internships and mentorship. The culture at McJ was strong, with no expense spared to create all kinds of team-building outings throughout the year. There were a LOT of smart and honorable people in all departments at McJ. And Bryan and Mark instilled such a sense of respect for the clients and because of that some of those relationships have lasted well over 20 years. And ultimately, Bryan and Mark were just warm and decent people that you were honored to be associated with.

Note that any con I mention here was minor compared to all the positives. No place is perfect. (Nor are any of us employees, right?) Overall, I feel too much focus was put on processes. Pure raw creativity was at times given a back seat to all the fully-outlined multi-step processes. There existed some fear of failure and that can always be limiting in the pursuit of groundbreaking work. Some, in the higher levels of other departments, didn't seem to trust creative. Generally, it wasn't nearly as political as most agencies, but there definitely were politics at play, generally at the upper management levels in various departments.

You get to work on some great clients and really improve your career skills. The profit sharing is phenomenal and most of the people are fantastic.
|
Hours are long and some people don't have your best interest at heart. You're often treated as a tool to do a job. You're work life balance will be mostly work.
