private:mentalfloss https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1261442 Jul 1st, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Mental Floss Editorial New York, NY Beware: Not What It Used To Be and Somewhat Toxic - you'll get to work with a very smart team of writers, editors, and video staff - you occasionally still get to work on smart, quirky content - free snacks and regular dog visits - reimbursement for transit and fully covered health insurance - a conveniently located office - decent work/life balance. Work mostly happens within the hours of 9-6 and no weekends Don't be fooled by some of the earlier, rosier reviews of Mental Floss. It's under new ownership these days (see reviews for Minute Media). Today, you can expect: - middle leadership that both micromanages and can be very self-involved and not empathetic to concerns of writers and editors - upper leadership that doesn't seem to understand how journalism works or why things beyond cheap clicks matter - overall leadership that never communicates what is happening, even when it directly affects a writer or editor - a very loud office where the power/wi-fi regularly goes out - a growing work load with no plans to help alleviate that stress - little opportunity for growth - a terrible PTO policy - patronizing comments from the all-male higher-ups (like being called "girls") - no diversity in terms of gender or race/ethnicity -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 3.0 3.0 4.0 1.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 1261442 Open - Listen to your editorial team or bring in new management that will. - Create an office space that isn't just men yelling about sports and playing ping pong all day. - Pay staff what they are worth and also give them opportunities to grow and move up in the hierarchy. - Examine why you've had so much staff turnover lately and make changes accordingly 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 0.0 Mar 21st, 2021 07:17AM Mar 21st, 2021 07:17AM Mental Floss
