Great people, poor management structure
The people who work here are top notch and extremely smart. The type of work done and the products made are of the highest quality.
Even though it's a medium to large size company, it still has many of the flaws of a family run business where things can change on the whim of the owners/upper management. The biggest issue is communication between departments. Financial troubles occurred in part because of last minute decisions that weren't discussed in detail and put strains on various departments.

Create a more hierarchical structure instead of the flat structure that currently exists. Trust employees with more information instead of keeping everything close to the vest and you'll get more buy in from the employees.

Family feel and pro grade products you can be proud of
Meyer Sound is a small company and has the feel. A lot of engineers have been there for a long time and many of them are brilliant and it is definitely a bonus to have a chance to work with them and learn from them. Hours are flexible. Some processes and systems are antiquated but in the process of being updated.
There is little room for advancement since the company is so small and turnover is low. Pay is also low for Bay Area and benefits aren't super, but passable. Things can be rushed and activities are often driven by the wrong department. Meyer is in an industry that goes through cycles, so at times work can be really slow and morale can get really low.

No Leadership
Great product and some really smart people to work with
Lack of leadership and vision is the Achilles heel for them. Ownership has no succession plan and Senior Management is inept and jockeying for power instead of providing leadership. Very sad to see.

Great product, questionable workplace dynamics
The best work-life balance. Laid back work environment. You can be a weirdo and fit in just fine here. Fellow engineers are very smart and super willing to work as a team across departments.
The product! Working here is a thing of pride for sure.
Engineering work here is very fun. There’s a lot of freedom so you can explore the things you’re most interested in. It’s a small company so the engineers tend to work closely with one another; I see this as a huge benefit.
It seems like some directors/managers will throw other teams under the bus to protect their own people which creates a stressful, frankly toxic work environment, which is unfortunate if your intention is to do your best work and help the company as a whole.
They don’t pay very well, and approval for new hires is really difficult to get even when an employee leaves the company and they need to be replaced. This puts a lot of strain on folks taking on extra work, for which you will see no bonus, raise etc.
Some people who have been working there a long time can get away with having a nasty attitude towards coworkers, further contributing to a toxic work environment.
Hard working people are not necessarily rewarded. Some people are, some people aren’t, which is hard to watch (and experience).

Lots of your staff is not happy because they don’t feel valued. Act like they could get paid more at another company to do the same work, because they could, rather than taking their presence for granted.

Culture
Being with the company for about 5 years now, I would say the culture is is very laid back and the manager don't micro manage, as long as you do you wok and stay on top of it and you should be fine. Meyer Sound is one of those company that stand by their employee and work with them if they have any issues as they have an open door policy. They are very flexible and I would say majority of the staff are long time employee some are are over 20 years +. This is a company that you can stay and grow with the company. Just to give you an idea, I handle some local and over sea accounts but I worked out a schedule with Meyer Sound that I get to leave around 3.30 to beat the traffic, which takes me over an hr to get home so by the time I get home, I can log into my account and work remotely from home to manage the Asia Accounts. Then I would come in around 8.30 am the next morning. They are very flexible.
I would say, because these employee are long term that have been with the company over 10 or more plus years they are some what resistance to changes and new ideas. It takes awhile to introduce and implement them. But, they are will to listen and slowly introduce them as long as there are in line with what's best for Meyer Sound.
