Working at the university you attend is a great way to gain some work experience while maintaining a good work/life balance. Most of the positions there schedule around your class schedule and availability, and if you are prompt with getting your schedule in, you can work as much or as little as you like. The pay is on the lower end, and these student positions do not come with benefits that other jobs do such as health coverage/dental, but the work-life balance more than makes up for it. Easy to learn, Friendly coworkers. No free meal (while I worked there), short shift slots. 0.0 0.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 3.0 5.0 Jan 27th, 2021 12:55AM Mar 20th, 2021 01:04PM Michigan Technological University Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
private:michigantechnologicaluniversity https://www.indeed.com/cmp/michigan-technological-university/reviews Aug 2nd, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Open Michigan Technological University Lifeguard Houghton, MI USA Started out Fun, Turned Into My Worst Nightmare I was initially very excited to work at MTU Recreation as a Lifeguard. For the first few months, the job was great. However, as time went on, I quickly realized that things ran poorly. The lady who managed the pool for many years was not even a lifeguard herself, yet she acted like she knew better than experienced lifeguards. When they finally brought someone competent in to manage the pool, they never gave her authority to do anything; she ended up leaving after one year. Due to poor management scaring everyone away, I often had to work over 40 hours a week to ensure the pool could remain open for its scheduled hours of operation. One week, I worked 60 hours. Shifts were split, so I had no personal time; I often worked from 5:45am to 8-10pm. I had enough time to get maybe lunch and sit on my phone here and there, but never enough time to actually go home or do anything outside of my work life. I worked 6 days a week MINIMUM as they could not get ample coverage. One time, I worked over 20 days straight without a full day off. One good thing is that during the school year they are very flexible with hours, but its breaks that are the worst in terms of working long hours. Flexible hours during the school year. Long hours during breaks, minimal days off, poor management, low pay, no social life. 0.0 0.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 Jan 27th, 2021 12:55AM Mar 20th, 2021 03:58PM Michigan Technological University Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
private:michigantechnologicaluniversity https://www.indeed.com/cmp/michigan-technological-university/reviews Jul 10th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Open Michigan Technological University Marketing and Communications Manager Advancement and Alumni Communications Lots of layers of management, not a lot of actual workers. Zero loyalty to empoloyees. Michigan Tech boasts endlessly about a degree from Tech being a golden passport to an excellent career. I worked for Michigan Tech for more than ten years and completed my degree during that time. When the university began firing people in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, my department immediately fired the two Tech alumni. I guess they value other degrees more than the ones they issue. My entire department had to undergo ADA training because my supervisor was uncomfortable with an employee's disability and tried to force them to resign because of it. The same supervisor literally shouted at me in public on two separate occasions, once in a staff meeting over a trivial misspelling and again in the midst of a gathering of alumni because of a failure of infrastructure for which I could not conceivably be responsible. For this behavior, she was promoted to assistant vice president. Employee evaluations are not done regularly. I had two in my last seven years with Tech. Raises and promotions are—in my experience—based entirely on who the supervisor is friends with and have nothing to do with performance or longevity. I trained three new hires who were subsequently promoted over me. Two of the three I continued to have to supervise and train despite their nominal status as my supervisor. None of my putative supervisors made any effort to stay up with current communications theory and practice, nor did they make any continuing education opportunities available. Over the course of ten years with the university, I was not allowed to attend a single professional development opportunity other than those developed in-house. Neither of the departments I worked in had any type of formal accounting procedure prior to my hiring. Multiple accounts, each with different reporting requirements, were commingled and there was no indication that any kind of reconciliation had ever been done. In both departments, it was clear that nobody understood even the most fundamental bookkeeping procedures. I discovered an erroneous charge for $12,000 that had gone completely undetected and a cash deposit in excess of a thousand dollars that had been placed in a filing cabinet and forgotten for several years. Tech has, in the last few decades, become increasingly top heavy with administration. Vice presidents and assistant vice presidents and directors and assistant directors and managers all flit from meeting to meeting bandying buzzwords with one another, all the while living in abject fear that they won't make it to retirement before someone realizes they know nothing at all about what they're doing. I've never worked at a more stressful job and I've been a police officer. Insurance, "free" tuition, nice gym. Mercenary atmosphere, incompetence, discrimination, cronyism, weather. 0.0 0.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 Jan 27th, 2021 12:55AM Mar 19th, 2021 08:04PM Michigan Technological University Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
