Your guests expect a top tier experience, but the lack of organization leads to your staff missing the mark and looking like fools in the process. You cannot be an “advocate of yes” unless you have the tools you need to fulfill someone’s wishes! Let your staff take tips. Customers actually complained about this policy. Possibly allow them to tip at the end of their stay for exemplary service and give them a list of departments and staff names to select from. Making meaningful connections is the cherry on top of the cake, but this is still the service industry in America and people at similar properties that accept tips make 4x what your staff makes. At Miraval Austin I was both a server and a barista. When I was serving, instead of getting “family meal“ which is pretty standard for restaurants, our only option for our promised food was buffet food which had been sitting out for 4+ hours. There were several people who got food poisoning from it. We were always understaffed. There were many days that we were at a manageable level but only had two servers and one food runner/server assistant to cover the entire floor. Because we were understaffed, we weren’t able to perform to our best ability, which is expected at a high-end resort. When I was a barista, I was the only barista during the time our guest count was at max capacity. I would be struggling to get drinks out. Management would come to see why drinks were taking so long but wouldn’t stay to help. It often felt as if they forgot about people behind the bar or they didn’t care. When all of the bartenders quit, I was expected to train the server that volunteered to bartend for the night even though I am not a qualified bartender. On one occasion, the stress level was so high that I had chest pains and management didn’t care, the expected me to continue working because there was no one to do my job. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 1.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 828678 Open When your staff is overwhelmed don’t say you are “here to help” if you are just going to sit in your office. Their management team has no idea what a wellness resort is, and certainly have not created a safe environment for either employees or guests. You can feel the tension and lack of authentic connection the moment you step onto the property. If you are a healer, do not go to work at Miraval Austin. They do not value your expertise and if you get hurt, they will terminate your employment, after denying your workers compensation claim. Unfortunately some of the best experiences were the perks of getting to enjoy the resort in order to relay its offerings to the guest and personal scheduling needs were met. However, to the employee, it ended up being counterproductive because it influenced a need or desire to stay in a department that is/was inherently flawed. I had worked in hospitality before Miraval and so I have a frame of reference to which I am providing my experience. This department has given trauma to employees by not providing a structured system, and stable work environment. In the nearly half a decade that I worked here I had worked with at least 8 different supervisors/managers for the department, most of which came from questionable backgrounds. Each manager that came had their own rules about how things should be done, but this was not extensively communicated to everyone (and I don't mean by email, which is easy to look over when you have 50-100 guest emails in a day). So you'd have a skewed system where, if a new manager did not like you, they could track down things you were "doing wrong" before you even knew the way of doing things had changed. And sometimes you might make the mistake of offering suggestions or advice about how things could work better and you'd pay the price. I had a manager once decide that everyone needed a desk change (periodically) like they do in elementary school. I happened to be off on the day of the desk change, and I came back to find I didn't have a desk! And they had placed my things somewhere no-one new where! I had another supervisor/manager who was pressured about the amount of calls that needed to be taken, so much so that she insisted that I hurry off the phone while I was in the middle of planning an expensive villa sale and activity schedule! To top off matters, the company had a revolving door of changes going on so you were almost always in a state of multi-tasking panic. Which in itself, based on studies, is counterproductive to learning and remembering what’s been taught. So then it goes in a circle and you get in trouble for doing things wrong and then you never get promoted. Unless you’re lucky enough to be in the preferred clique and these people are questionable in their abilities and how they got there was clearly not by a fair or structured system. So then you get to deal with them and on and on it goes until you are lucky enough to find another job to meet you basic needs. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 NO_OPINION 3.0 2.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 828678 Open Upper/upper management: 1) Provide structured rules for the department so that unfair promotions don't take place, 2) Make some general department standards that new managers/supervisors have to follow and that the existing employees are familiar with, 3) make a rule that existing employees get to provide advice during an annual review, to the new manager/supervisor, without getting in trouble (and have it recorded for safe measure) 4) Provide a conducive and safe learning environment for the employees based on evidence. Perhaps if you work in the spa or as one of the scabs things might be different. But anybody I knew who was there was only using it as a stepping stone temporarily.
