Work life balance is extremely important to us and a flexible working plan is reviewed on a case by case basis for anybody that requests it. Some people start late, others finish earlier to get their kids from nursery. Whatever it is, we look for ways to make it happen whilst maintaining the equality of hours worked and flexibility given to any one person with the need of the team to be productive and available at the right times.
It takes a while for changes to filter down and it seems from this we haven’t perhaps been transparent enough on the business plans for Mirriad. As a listed company it is a tricky balance to ensure staff are aware of where the business is heading without disclosing price sensitive information. In our regular town halls we talk about the business, along with other commercial items, and everybody is asked to be part of it. We can learn from this comment though and will respond accordingly if employees have specific questions on the business direction.
In every smallish company there is going to be an issue with advancement and in succession planning. We provide a great environment for people who enjoy tech and being part of the build and scale period for Mirriad. We are not IBM and we can’t offer a defined career path that moves upwards, grade by grade, within a defined timescale. We can offer an interesting and challenging environment and we have seen many of our employees move up or across into new roles. It is not that development doesn’t happen, it does, just that we are limited somewhat by our size and the need to balance delivery with individual development.
The office is bright and new with a large kitchen area. Requests have been made to make this space recreational and it is a fair point that is under consideration. We try to ensure everyone’s views on this are considered as one person’s cool idea of bean bags and pool table may be another person’s nightmare if they just want to read their text messages and eat their meal-deal in peace!
We review our benefit packages against the market regularly and currently offer private medical for the individual, a travel loan scheme, a bike to work programme, life assurance and holiday allowances – which at least matches, if not exceeds most employee benefit packages.
A wonder it's still going
|
|
Perceived to be an innovative player so looks good when showing mates.
Some really good people there, who are slowly being reduced to shadows.
|
Under the hood, it is an entirely manual creative process, with a completely fictitious message that it utilises AI. The only technology is based on 10-year-old tech, Moka, which you can buy anywhere. Everything else is a large group of cheap labour in India doing all the work manually, from analysing the content (they don't use the AI stuff because they don't want to and because it doesn't work properly) and they don't have that much volume anyway, through to the actual delivery which is done using Adobe tools and again lots of hard graft by a team in India. Their message to investors and the market at large is just fiction. All the 'success' the new management has had to date was just things coming in from before their time. Tencent was long in the making due to needing custom development and came through despite new management, not because of it. All the new initiatives have resulted in zero results and the consultants they've brought in have generated zero results. Also great to see everyone getting a 3% pay increase, except for the senior management like the CFO patting himself on the back with a 15% increase for not quite having spent all the cash in the bank while not making any money. I could keep going but glad I've moved on from this disaster story now.

One of the things we had to do was to address some pay issues where people had initially joined us at lower than market rate for various reasons. It was important that the people we needed to keep stayed with us as we continue to grow.

Our India office team do work extremely hard as you say but AI is definitely front and centre for us - we are in the process of adding more people into that team as the Mirriad tech is the beating heart of our business.

As they say, you can't please all the people all of the time. I hope whilst you were with us you gained some experience you hadn't had previously - even if that was learning to deal with working in an environment you didn't enjoy.

Mirriad prides itself on hiring great people and you will have been one of them! Company is going the right way - Friendly staff and environment
|
|
I have been working in Mirriad for less than a year and what stands out from the start is the team spirit within the company. Everyone is really helpful to assist you even the Senior Management team. Office is really nice with a big kitchen/dining space where people socialize.
I am constantly learning new things and being challenged
The company has an amazing product and it is on the right track to grow
|
As per many start-up companies it can get stressful during times

Research Engineer
|
|
I worked in the R&D team for more than 4 years and 1/2. I am surprised to have lasted this long whereas the turnover rate was alarming higher in other departments/team. May my team and my line manager be thanked for treating me well.
Now brace yourself if you're not in the R&D team. There is a big difference of treatment in other departments where **many** employees were a lot less happy.
I'll only speak for my case:
- Relatively good work life balance. -- However that was clearly not the case for the first year.
- Relatively good freedom in leading the research
- Friendly colleagues
|
- The culture is clearly more sales-oriented than engineer-oriented, which means less consideration for the doers in general.
- Lack of *deep* and *serious* collaboration between departments.
- Too much hierarchy and red-tape for a small company.
- Lack of attention details and very often superficial work was delivered. -- the R&D team has learnt its lessons at least, not in some departments. --
- Resistance to changes and the technical debt that has been piling for 10 years. -- In the R&D team it has improved by instilling a bit more discipline here and there where it is really needed but at what cost in time and energy to change mentalities! Hopefully the lessons are now learnt... Cannot speak for other departments --
- Lack of honesty in the marketing/front-facing. It would be good to stop pretending being a startup for example. And if that was only the thing to mention...
- The company pretends listening to employees... Too many politics and tactics resorted by other line managers to keep a good profile w.r.t. their N+1.
- No career evolution... This company is also excelling at killing the staff morale. Eventually most of us stopped caring and quit like I did.
- Minuscule bonuses and also your salary will become eventually quite below the market value after two years in the company.
- Inadequate hardware/equipment for deep learning research. Now the company finally invested in good hardware when I was leaving. But what a waste of time! Meanwhile there was clearly a double standard in enabling the employees to exercise their expertise in acceptable conditions. Let's not even talk about the embed artists who are doing the hard work for the embedding/post-production work. On the other hand for a very long time, this company has clearly preferred paying expensive trips and hotels for the sales team and/or some senior managers in the hope of getting more contracts... After more than 4 years in the company, the company has yet to become cash-flow positive. As of April 2019, it's clearly not the case. Again an enormous waste.
- Inadequate sales/business strategy. Instead of focusing on some key markets and developing deeper commercial relationship with some key clients before expanding, the company was trying to be everywhere and could not focus on some directions. We changed business directions everyday pretty much! As a consequence, the marketplace platform that was being built had no consistency, and had been consuming lots of money. Common sense is not that common, it seems...
- Stubbornness. One example, some line managers/team leads were incapable of admitting their mistakes in technical choices. That lead to a toxic and divisive work environment in some departments. Many people quit and will quit.
Obviously it is not black or white. The new management has realized some of the business mistakes but I still don't like the management style -- some bad habits die hard...
The cons outweigh the pros by far currently as of April 2019.

To **some** senior managers: I expect you to lead better and by example. Learn to hire the competent people.
Show more humanity (saying "the business has no emotions" is not gonna cut it).
Show more honesty, more transparency.
To some of you, I have found your condescending attitude very damaging to the company.

Seriously, everyone should have the opportunity to have their voice heard and we value feedback from all of our employees, past and present. We have made some enormous changes which have and will have a significant impact on how we run our business and we understand that change can be too slow for some. We are still the number 1 innovator in our field and it is not always easy to be a trailblazer!
