I joined the agency right as it - and their clients/rest of the world - was shifting their approach to experiential as well as tightening their marketing budget. While team members dropped - due to various circumstances - Michael's creative genius never wavered and his vision for the future of the agency was always strong. With many ups and downs, I'm pleased to have been a part of this company, proud of the projects I was able to lead, and forever grateful for the creative thought leader that Michael was (is) despite many outside opinions on the company's management style. Excited to see where the new team will take the Mirrorball name! It used to be much more of social scene but now the agency is solely focused on the work. Blatter is a tough boss who only accepts the highest level of creativity and originality. He has a crazy ability to remember and reference past work. Mirrorball has morphed and changed over the years with partners separating and people coming and going but the current iteration of which I still do freelance work for is still “best in class” from the perspective of creativity and execution. In my ten years as a designer, my 5 years at Mirrorball has been an inspiring place to grow and learn and work on the most outrageous projects in the business. If you want to work really hard, be challenged and learn from the most experienced team then Mirrorball is a great place. Instead of fostering and nurturing talent, the CEO bred a very contentious work place driven by ego and mean spiritedness. He spoke negatively about everyone that worked for him. He inserted himself in every aspect of a project, derailing and ruining relationships with vendors and clients. He inserts his “25 years of industry knowledge” to “prove” he understands what he’s doing, but ends up spending 10x more the amount bc he’s clueless, then blames everyone around him for his careless spending. What once use to be a successful and impressive 80 person agency is down to a pathetic grouping of 3-4 staffers. The CEO has single handedly dismantled his own agency, alienating many great talent that once use to walk through the doors when the agency was run by real leaders. Any recent positive reviews you see here, are not legitimate, he has paid a girl to write positive reviews and has badgered Glassdoor to remove negative ones. This man is a total hack and has one of the worst reputations in the industry. The work was both hard and fun. Looking back, I owe a lot of gratitude to Mirrorball; Michael Blatter (the Founder & CEO); and the folks that have made Mirrorball what it is today. In hindsight, working at Mirrorball was a great career experience and my knowledge and contacts have gone on to support me to this day. They used to have a nice office with a roof deck..... but its gone now. Mirrorball has gone downhill fast. The creative director/ visionary left a couple of years ago and he was the main reason clients and employees worked with the company. The CEO treats his employees like they are disposable he discriminates based on gender and looks and he generally lacks respect for other people. Everything was always a rush with no budget because the money is so poorly managed, there is absolutely no work life balance - they were always understaffed so they work you into the ground and then dispose of you. They used to have some very talented employees but most of them quit or were laid off and now they have about four employees left. There is no longer any vision, culture or direction at Mirrorball, it seems like they are always scrambling for business. I learned much from my few years there through excellent mentors, bringing my portfolio and work-ethic to a higher degree, something i doubt i would have had the opportunity to build elsewhere. New York demands much of your time, as does this company, but the bonds and trust created between my colleagues on the mountains of projects we were tested on allows a lifetime of connectivity, collaboration and friendship. I can say i walk into any business more confident because of it. Constant hirings and firings on questionable positions seemed to hurt the company and its brand, this unfortunately came at a time when most of the mega work came to a halt.
